Sapna’s Summer Haircare Heroes

Between sand, sweat and a few too many missed wash days, summer isn’t always the most hair-friendly time of the year. But with the right routine, frizz, dryness and post-beach buildup don't stand a chance. Here, Sapna shares the products she’s learnt to lean on each summer – from scalp-soothing treatments to tools that travel well…

Best For: Post-Beach Nourishment

The Renaissance Circle, £11.50 | Davines

When my hair’s taken one too many dips in the sea or suffered under a hard-water rinse, this is what I reach for. I love slicking it through damp lengths in a post-beach shower – or even when I’m just sitting by the pool with a book – then twisting it gently up into a bun and claw clip so it can work its magic. After an hour and a rinse, hair feels genuinely replenished.

Available at SEPHORA.CO.UK

Best For: Getting The Grime Out

Detox Shampoo, £28 | Ouai

I use this every other wash, but it really comes into its own in summer. In the face of SPF, sweat and slightly more styling product than I like to admit, this gives my scalp and roots a proper reset, without stripping or drying them out. It lathers beautifully and smells delicious too.

Best For: Calming Your Scalp

Rosemary Conditioner, £28 | Nécessaire

I’ve gone on about Larry King’s rosemary oil plenty, so I’ll spare you. But having rosemary in my routine is now non-negotiable – especially when my scalp is in meltdown mode over the warmer months. This is what I turn to after a hot, sticky day or when I’ve left wash day a little too long. It’s gentle, soothing and smells so good. Not a must-have, but combined with the Nécessaire santal body cream, it’s like full-body aromatherapy.

Available at SEPHORA.CO.UK

Best For: Dry Shampoo Sceptics

Soothing Dry Shampoo, £22 | Maria Nila

Dry shampoo and I have historically not been friends, but this one has turned things around. No white cast, no gunky buildup, and it smells genuinely good. Plus it’s packed with ingredients that actually care for your scalp.

Best For: Sun Protection

SU Milk Sun-Protecting Leave-In Spray, £24.75 | Davines

Heat protection isn’t just for your heat tools. I use it pre-sun and post-swim to hydrate, detangle, smooth and shield my lengths from UV. Lightweight with a summery smell, it’s the kind of spray you’ll keep in your beach bag all season long. And if your flyaways are acting up, a little spritz of this onto your hands first works like a charm to flatten them out.

Available at DAVINES.COM

Best For: Conditioning Your Strands

Brazilian Joia Milky Leave-In Conditioner, £28 | Sol de Janeiro

I’ll take any excuse to smell like Sol de Janeiro. I was obsessed with its discontinued conditioning mask, so this leave-in has been a very welcome discovery. A couple of spritzes post-shower keeps things soft, glossy and nourished. Plus it contains biomimetic peptides and cupuaçu butter for a bit of reparative action.

Best For: A Little Extra TLC

SOLU Sea Salt Scrub Cleanser, £32.85 | Davines

I love a scalp scrub all year round but especially in the summer, when there’s more salt, sweat and styling product to get rid of. This foams into a proper lather so doubles up as a shampoo to leave my hair feeling squeaky clean and conditioned. Also, it’s one of the few that doesn’t feel too gritty or harsh.

Available at AMAZON.CO.UK

Best For: On-The-Go Touch-Ups

Unplugged Cordless Styler, £299 | ghd

I try not to heat style too much on holiday, but for smoothing down frizz or giving my fringe a bit of a shape-up, this is ideal. It’s compact, chic and wireless – which is a gamechanger for travel. I’ve also used it in a taxi pre-dinner and can confirm: it holds up.

Best For: A Splurge Worth The Money

Supersonic r Hair Dryer, £449.99 | Dyson

I spent years begging my hairdresser to let me take her Pro Dyson hairdryer home since it wasn't available for consumers to buy – but finally, my prayers have been answered. Lightweight, powerful and every bit as sleek as all Dyson haircare, it’s made drying my hair less of a chore. If you’re someone who travels with your dryer, this one’s so worth the investment.

Best For: The Fragrance Lover

Diptyque, Byredo & Frédéric Malle Hair Fragrances

Portrait Of A Lady Hair Mist, £105 | Frédéric Malle
Bal D’Afrique Hair Perfume, £60 | Byredo
Hair Mist Eau Des Sens, £60 | Diptyque

Scent is a big deal for me – and these take things to the next level. I’ve layered up with hair oils, conditioners and styling sprays, but nothing gets quite as many compliments as a scented hair mist. Frédéric Malle’s Portrait of a Lady is one of my signatures, while Byredo’s Bal D’Afrique is super fresh and ideal for summer. Finally, Diptyque’s Eau des Sens is a cult favourite for a reason: light, clean and really long-lasting.

Best For: Soothing Care

Serene Scalp Soothing Leave-On Treatment, £45 | Oribe

Oribe is another haircare splurge, but it is one that I always find worth the money. When my scalp is feeling a bit frazzled, this is a go-to for calming and cooling it. The treatment feels like a mini spa in a jar, and it’s easy to use since there’s no rinse needed. True to Oribe form, it smells expensive in the best way.

Best For: Going The Extra Mile

Scalp Gua Sha, £32 | Act+Acre

This tool has become a slightly addictive part of my routine. Used with an oil or serum, it helps stimulate growth and blood circulation, and generally makes me feel like I’m doing something good for my scalp health. If you’re the kind of person who loves facial massage, you’ll get it.

Available at AMAZON.CO.UK

Best For: Lightweight Shine

No. 7 Bonding Oil, £28 | Olaplex

I’ve repurchased this more times than I can count. It smooths frizz, adds shine, protects against heat, and somehow does all that without weighing my hair down. It’s small but mighty – and especially useful when I’m travelling light.
