How To Recycle Your Beauty Products Properly

Recycling your beauty products is now easier than ever, thanks to John Lewis who allows their loyalty members to take five or more empties back to any beauty hall in exchange for money off their next beauty purchase. What’s more, John Lewis now stocks more conscious beauty products than ever, allowing customers to shop more consciously. Here, we explain the BeautyCycle scheme in full, and share some of our favourite products worth looking out for on your next visit.

CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH JOHN LEWIS & PARTNERS

BeautyCycle Explained…

Unique to John Lewis, the BeautyCycle recycling service was hugely popular from its market-leading national launch in 2019. Offering members of the My John Lewis’ loyalty programme the chance to recycle empty make-up, skincare and beauty products from any brand, in store, the idea was born out of customers’ own desire to be more mindful about what they buy and gain better understanding about what happens to products once they reach the end of their life. This prompted the high-street retailer to create BeautyCycle, with a mission to eliminate the idea of waste. According to a statistic from Zero Waste Week in 2018-2019, the cosmetics industry produces 120 billion units of packaging yearly, so services like this are more important than ever – especially as many council recycling systems don’t accept beauty products due to the complexity of their packaging.

How It Works For You…

You can bring in five or more empty beauty products to your nearest John Lewis Beauty Hall – simply hand them over at any beauty counter while you make your next purchase. Remember to show your My John Lewis’ card, too, as this will ensure you get £5 off.* Even better, from the 19th April to the 3rd May, your reward will be doubled*, so you’ll receive £10 to spend instead – just remember to bring in five products or more, no less. As for how the system works, empty packages will be separated into metals, fibres and plastics before each component is recycled or moulded into new products – think storage containers, outdoor furniture or plastic lumber.

Why It’s Worth Doing…

Since the scheme’s inception, more than 26,000 customers have recycled with John Lewis, saving 231,000 products from going to waste in landfill – making it an initiative to be proud of. Make sure you sign up to be a ‘My John Lewis’ member to get involved – it’s completely free and the process is seamless. Once you become a member, you can enjoy special vouchers, exclusive events and much more.

Other Ways To Be More Conscious…

When it comes to being more eco-friendly, how you dispose of your products is important, but so are the purchases you make. John Lewis now stocks a host of efficacious brands that are committed to eco-friendly practices – from REN Clean Skincare, to Evolve Beauty, Susanne Kaufmann and fragrance brand Floral Street. Look out for Le Labo, too, whose fragrances are hugely popular worldwide for their vegan ingredients, potency and refillable packaging.
