5 Make-Up Tips To Help You Feel Fresh & Awake

If you’re feeling a bit lacklustre and tired following all the festivities, the right make-up can make a real difference. From shades that give you a healthy glow to secret hacks for brighter, fresher-looking skin, SL’s beauty contributor Adeola is here to share her advice…

01

Hydrate Skin

“If you want to look fresh-faced, it all starts with the use of plumping and hydrating ingredients. Feeding your skin with moisture will ensure smoother make-up application, while enhancing your complexion’s glow. When your skin is moisturised, it automatically looks brighter, so you’ll need less make-up too. Post-Christmas, when our skin tends to look a bit dull, I recommend a cream like Drunk Elephant’s Lala Retro Whipped formula. It is so rich and buttery – it contains African oils that strengthen your skin’s barrier and ward off irritation. I would then follow up with a product like Sarah Chapman’s Glow Elixir. It’s a lightweight serum-oil hybrid that revitalises and illuminates your complexion. For overnight repair – and next-day glow – use a serum like Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair. It works wonders to plump and nourish. I also love Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face, which doubles as a moisturiser and primer, giving skin a smoother, suppler appearance.”

02

Try Lightweight Foundations

“Another way to achieve a healthier-looking complexion is to use a lightweight skin tint or foundation. These new, modern, hybrid formulas – like the Danessa Myricks  Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Tint – combine skincare benefits with make-up, offering hydration and a radiant finish. They’re also likely to improve the look of your skin over time. I recommend Max Factor’s Miracle Pure 2-in-1 Skin Reset Serum Foundation too, which combines coverage with nourishing ingredients. Alternatively, Huda Beauty’s Easy Blur Foundation is ideal for a blurring effect and a natural finish. If you want to add extra luminosity with little fuss, incorporate Saie’s Glowy Super Gel  into your routine. It can be worn under or mixed with your base for an all-over luminosity.”

03

Play With Colour

“Blush is one of the quickest and most effective ways to give your complexion a healthy overhaul. Whether you want to brighten your skin or add extra dimension, you can’t go wrong with it. To achieve a fresh-faced, lifted look, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards to your hairline. This technique enhances your face shape and creates a soft glow. Choosing the right shade is key – look at the colour in your lips and try to match it to this.

“When it comes to products, rely on cream and liquid formulas as they are so easy to blend. I love Merit Beauty’s Flush Balms for ease and their dewy quality, while Pat McGrath’s Legendary Glow Blush Stick offers buildable colour in a convenient stick format. For a budget option, try the e.l.f. Camo Liquid Blush or Revolution’s Superdewy Liquid Blush.”

Brighten Up Tired Eyes

“Often focusing on the eyes alone will help you to look and feel refreshed, as it’s the area most prone to darkness. Prep your eye with a cream to smooth the delicate skin here. Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin Eye Cream is perfect for nourishing and protecting the under-eye area, while Garnier’s Brightening Vitamin C Eye Cream adds a touch of radiance with its luminosity-boosting vitamin C and caffeine. Next, neutralise any darkness with a colour corrector like the Bobbi Brown’s Skin Corrector Stick. Its creamy texture evens out dark circles without feeling heavy. If you’re unsure what shade to go for, you want a pinky/salmon colour to help neutralise blue or purple discolouration under the eyes, and a peach colour corrector to help neutralise brown. To finish, apply a radiant concealer to brighten and perfect. For full coverage with a natural, crease-free finish, the Tarte Creaseless Creamy Full Coverage Concealer is a great option. For a lightweight, luminous effect, I love the Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Concealer or the NARS Cosmetics Light Reflecting Eye Brightener, which both brightens and conceals.”

05

Highlight Key Features

“Highlighter is one of the best ways to boost your skin’s vitality. The right application can breathe life back into your complexion. The key is to apply it strategically to the high points of your face – like the tops of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, the cupid’s bow and the inner corners of your eyes – basically anywhere the light naturally hits for instant radiance.

For a versatile option that suits all skin tones, Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter is a must-have. Use it as a base under your foundation, mix it in for an all-over glow or apply it on top for a dewy highlight. For those who love a high-shine finish, the KJH Hyper Shine Lite Pigment delivers an intense glow that’s perfect for evenings out – apply sparingly with a brush or your fingers for precision. If you prefer a natural, balmy texture, the Chanel Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick is ideal. For budget-friendly brilliance, the L'Oréal Lumi Glotion is a lightweight liquid highlighter that adds an effortless, healthy glow – apply it to bare skin or over make-up for a radiant finish. Lastly, the Sculpted by Aimee Liquid Lights in ‘Golden Glow’ works beautifully for medium to deeper skin tones – dot it onto the cheekbones and collarbones for a sun-kissed effect.”
