THE HYPE

Certified cool-girl brand REFY is not short on buzz. Brainchild of influencer-turned-entrepreneur Jess Hunt, it’s renowned for its clever, feature-enhancing textures and forward-thinking approach.  Despite REFY only having been around for four years, it has already left an indelible mark on the beauty space – and lips are an areas in which REFY has carved itself a niche.

A gloss is a gloss, right? REFY’s rave-reviewed version – renowned for that luscious, glaze-bathed finish – begs to differ. At the other end of the spectrum sits its new launch, Blur Liner. Velvety and unapologetically matte, it features a thick, domed tip – a far cry from the traditionally finer nib which allows for precision. Somehow it works – and it’s won over the entire SL beauty team.

THE FORMULA

Overlined lips are passé. Now, it’s all about creating the illusion of a fuller lip with more subtlety. Blur Liner’s soft, creamy texture is well suited to those wanting a hazy, slightly undone look rather than a sharp statement. Enriched with oils, the vegan, cruelty-free formula feels more nourishing than other more opaque, durable mattes. But what it lacks in staying power, it more than makes up for with its diffused, just-kissed effect.

The range of six shades feels understated and natural-looking – fitting given the colours are inspired by real lip tones. All are more muted than they appear at first glance. ‘Opal’ is a tawny pink that looks great with a tan, whereas ‘Umber’ is a cosy, earthy brown that feels right for autumn.

THE BEST WAY TO USE IT

Matte lip products naturally contain less moisture than satin formulas, meaning they can cling to uneven texture. For a silky-smooth finish, gently exfoliate your lips with a scrub beforehand.

Application is instinctive and easy, even for liner novices. Outline your lips to create the illusion of a fuller pout, building up the pigment with light pressure to get a stronger colour. Designed to ‘hug’ your lip line, the chunky, domed tip is unexpectedly effective. Rather than using precision like a thinner, more traditional design, the thick nib smooths over fine lines, creating a blurred, pillowy effect.

“I wish I had some hacks to share, but the application process really is foolproof – it’s so easy you can even get away with not using a mirror,” says Jess. “It creates a naturally fuller lip with no need to blur it out with your finger – the innovative domed applicator does all the work for you.”

THE REVIEWS

“This lip liner is great for everyday wear and has become a staple in my make-up routine. It effortlessly makes your lips look plumper, but in a natural way.”

“This is the best combination of lipstick and liner. It gives a soft, flattering line that lasts and is so much easier to apply than a normal lip liner, which requires you to be perfectly precise.”

“I bought this in the shade ‘Umber’ for the ultimate 90s look. The product stays on for hours, isn’t drying and is buildable for whatever look you’re going for.”

“I’ve always been useless with lip liner, but this is foolproof and makes your lips look naturally fuller. It’s easy to apply and there’s no need to blur it out with your fingers. I went for ‘Opal’ which is very close to my actual lip colour. I have olive skin which can appear grey in the winter months, but this shade is perfect and natural.”
