The New AW23 Make-Up Collections We Love

A new season always brings new make-up colours, tones and products to play with. Right now, it’s all about tawny tones for eyes and lips – and lit-from-within skin. SL beauty columnist Georgia Day has everything you need to know…

Foolproof Foundations

While it’s tempting to opt for a full face of foundation as soon as the sun disappears and the temperature dips, autumn’s bolder colour palette of warm, burnished tones looks best against a naturally glowing complexion. Offering enough coverage to mask imperfections and even out skin tone, Clarins’ new Tinted Oleo-Serum is a gorgeously lightweight skin tint that still allows your natural skin to shine through. If you prefer a little more coverage, try a foundation with light-reflecting properties to add luminosity to your look. Rose Inc’s highly anticipated Softlight Skin-Smoothing Liquid Foundation has just arrived and is every bit as good as you’d imagine. Along with a soft-focus finish, it contains skincare actives like ectoin and fermented reishi mushroom to soothe irritation.

Chic Cheeks

A pop of colour is often all that’s needed to lift a greying, wintry complexion. Kiko’s 90s-inspired collection features three silky, dual-toned Rock and Blush blushers in complementary shades that make it easy to sculpt and shade cheekbones at the same time. Or you could add a little designer drama to your look courtesy of Carolina Herrera’s Good Girl Blusher. The richly pigmented shades are great for adding a windy-walk flush to cheeks – you can also tap onto lips for a tonal effect.

Perfect Palettes

A great palette is one you’ll use every inch of, so choose wisely to ensure you will love – and wear – every colour. Ticking both the style and substance boxes is the Diorshow 5 Couleurs Palette in Rouge Saga, a mix of rich burnt toffee and chocolate shades all finished with a cosy knit-inspired design. Though tempting to save and admire, the five shades are all so wearable and can be taken easily from day into night. Helping to streamline your options and add plenty of wow factor to your make-up bag is Hourglass’s limited edition Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked. This year’s palettes feature striking illustrations by artist Katie Scott and support the Nonhuman Rights Project. Whichever design you choose, a radiant glow is guaranteed thanks to the combination of gold-speckled, light-reflecting bronzers, blushers and highlighters.

Enchanting Eyes

Cream eyeshadow formulas that are easy to apply and even easier to wear are a great option year-round, but they come into their own when paired with an autumnal palette of pearlescent metallics. Suquu’s Liquid Lustre Eyes come in several, gently shimmering shades including a rich reddish brown and a sparkling burnished amber. Simply swipe over your lids and buff in with your fingers. If you prefer a traditional powder formula but love the idea of segueing into shimmer for autumn evenings, then Paco Rabanne’s new collection hits the spot. The Mini Palette in Date Night is a highly pigmented duo of sparkling taupe and champagne.

Lovely Lips

If you want to wave goodbye to summer’s easy nudes but you’re not quite ready for winter’s berry shades, autumn is the perfect time to play with something in between in the form of deep nudes and red-based browns. Combining the nourishment of a balm and the high shine of a gloss with the season’s palette re YSL’s Rouge Volupté Candy Glaze lipsticks. We love Cacao No Boundary, a brownish brick-red that looks stunning on all skin tones. Prada’s recent foray into beauty is a masterclass in understated chic and its Monochrome Hyper Matte Lipsticks are the perfect addition to an AW beauty wardrobe. The velvety textured shades look ultra-modern when paired with brushed up brows and layers of mascara; we love shade 077 for a bold statement look.

…And A Cool Collab

Merit’s collaboration with New York fashion house Proenza Schouler has yielded a reimagined vegan leather version of Merit’s signature bag – and it’s free when you spend over £100. We’re looking at the Runway Set, which not only qualifies you for the bag but includes everything you need to feel pulled together and polished, including the excellent dewy Flush Balm and Shade Slick Lip Oil.
