10 Beauty Looks We Loved This Year
Teruko Burrell, Beauty Is Boring
The Look: Glossy, Statement Lips
How To Create: This impactful look was from one of Allure magazine’s biggest beauty shoots to date. Playful make-up was the order of the day, especially for Teruko here, whose skin was prepped with Sisley’s Hydra Global Serum, before Surratt’s Artistique Blush in Brilliant Idée was swept over the cheeks and lids, finished off with Chanel’s Baume Essentiel Highlighter tapped onto the centre of the cheeks and lids. As for the lips, Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet in Infrarose was applied before layering it up with Rouge Coco Gloss in 172 Tendresse. An ideal look for those wanting to play with colour in a fresh and youthful way.

Sophie Turner, Hung Vanngo
The Look: Smokey Charcoal Eyes
How To Create: This sultry look was created during awards season early this year and is still one of our favourite looks Sophie Turner has ever sported. Eyes were rimmed with inky black kohl and winged out at the corners for extra definition. To replicate the eye, look to MAC’s Chunky Kajal Crayon in Flourish Me Deep and Max Factor’s Smokey Eye Palette in Opulent Nudes. Start by layering the palest shadow in the palette all over your lids, before using the crayon to build up a similar winged effect on the upper lash line. Then, use a brush or your finger to smudge the black liner into your lids for a softer, more diffused finish. If the eye is starting to look too harsh, go back in with the lightest shadow in your palette and buff it in on top of your liner to take down any harsh edges. Finish off by running the shimmery shade along your lower lash line to soften everything up. We will be replicating this one for NYE.

The Look: Glossy Party Lids
How To Create: Want a statement eye without loading your lids in black? This glossy take on the smokey eye is for you. Do a copycat version with Stila’s Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Shadow in Ballet Baby. The brush applicator makes it easy to layer as little or as much as you want – just remember to take it right up to the middle of your eye sockets for the same, eye-opening effect here. Once you’ve built up your wet shimmer lid, run a long-lasting eyeliner – like Avon’s Gel Paint Pencil – all around the inner lash line, softly smudging it out at the edges with your finger for the same lived-in edge.

Robyn Schrikker, Nikki Make-Up
The Look: Subtle Feline Flicks
How To Create: Artist Nikki dubbed this ‘date-night make-up’. It was as much about the skin as it was the eyes. Robyn’s face was prepped with Chantecaille’s Future Skin Foundation in both Wheat and Banana to bring more dimension. Nikki then used By Terry’s CC Brightening Powder in Sunny Flash, with the same brush she used to apply the foundation (Clinique’s Foundation Buff Brush) for a creamy, satin glow. As for the eyes, lids were painted with Charlotte Tilbury’s Eyes to Mesmerise in Bette for a rich, bronzey eye, before Nikki used Clarins Eyeliner in Chestnut all along the lash line. She winged it out further at the edges and right into the inner corners of the eyes to create a soft, almond shape. To finish, Natasha Denona’s Biba Palette was used, with Nikki dabbing on the ‘Spot’ shade to the lash line for extra sheen and highlight.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Patrick Ta
The Look: The English Rose
How To Create: Pretty pinks and creamy nudes came together here for ‘English rose’ vibes – a look that’s beautiful for daytime, but can be amped up in the evening too. Patrick used Crème de La Mer’s Soft Fluid Foundation all over, before buffing in NARS’s classic Orgasm blush all over the cheeks and eyelids. Skin was finished with a misting of Patrick Ta’s cult Highlighting Mist for a soft-focus glow that looked healthy and radiant. Dab on any rosy lip gloss to pull the whole look together, and keep everything refined and tonal.

Kiara Pike, Leah Darcy
The Look: Glossy Skin & Pink Lids
How To Create: This party look was all about fun, vibrant lids and glossy skin. To replicate the same velvety complexion, try using a base like Fenty’s Pro Filt’r Hydrating Foundation which has a dewiness to it that adds the perfect amount of shine and glow. To build upon the highlight, take Fenty’s Match Stix Highlighters in Espresso and Bordeaux Brat along the cheekbones for a reflection that will catch the light beautifully. As for the lids, try blending Pinker and Zamn together from Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Jackie Aina Eyeshadow Palette. To finish off, take one of the lighter shades from the palette underneath the lower lash line for extra enhancement and definition.

Betina Goldstein, Khaite SS20 Nails
The Look: Micro French Manicure
How To Create: Delicate French manicures were spied everywhere backstage for SS20, but this is by far our favourite. Betina Goldstein used Essie’s sheer polish Mademoiselle as a glossy base, before dipping a super-fine brush in white paint for the curved tips. It looks intricate, but it’s surprisingly easy to recreate – make sure you keep the white lines as thin as possible. If you don’t have a thin brush to hand, orange sticks work just as well when it comes to drawing on sharp, defined lines.

Hailey Bieber, Katie Jane Hughes
The Look: Seriously Glossy Skin
How To Create: While Katie labelled this link on Instagram ‘Smokey Pinks’, we’re all about those glossy, statement-making cheeks. To get a similar sheeny finish, try keeping actual base make-up to a minimum by using Glossier’s Stretch Concealer on the areas that need it most – the formula is creamy and spreadable enough to easily double up as foundation. Go over the cheeks, and any areas you want to highlight, with Make Beauty’s Dew Pot, using your fingers to tap it on gently for that unbeatable glow. To get a similar eye colour, look to MAC’s Dusk Rose Palette. Brimming with almost exact-match shades, you’ll have this look mastered in no time.

Margot Robbie, Pati Dubroff
The Look: Warm, Sunset Tones
How To Create: Make-up artist Pati Dubroff used orange tones to add warmth to Margot’s complexion, bringing structure and definition to the face at the same time. On Instagram, she revealed the exact products she used to pull this look together. They included Chanel’s Ombre Premiere Gloss in Solaire, which was swiped over the lids, alongside the brand’s Soleil Tan de Chanel Duo Bronze et Lumiere Clair, swept over the face. Love the lipstick too? That’s Chanel’s Rouge Coco Flash in Pulse – apply straight from the bullet to get the same, strong colour.

Kate Bosworth, Hung Vanngo
The Look: All Things Rouge
How To Create: This statement look was painted on by celebrity make-up artist Hung Vanngo. While it’s quite daring, the key is to make sure your complexion is pared back, with just a dash of blusher to keep everything fresh – Kate likes RMS Beauty’s Lip2Cheek colours. Play with shades from Huda Beauty’s Ruby Obsessions Palette on the eyes; and try Tom Ford’s Emotionproof Liner in Pinot in the inner lining of the eye to further enhance the look. For the lips, rich reds like this look best when they complement your skin’s undertone. So, if you’re fair like Kate, opt for a shade like Glossier’s Generation G Lipstick in Zip – a poppy, orange red that suits most complexions. Darker skin tones can afford to go even brighter – try NARS’s Audacious Lipstick in Lana. If it feels too intimidating, avoid doing both the lip and eye; just experiment with one.
