10 Beauty Tricks To Make You Look Younger

10 Beauty Tricks To Make You Look Younger

Founder of all-natural brand RMS, Rose-Marie Swift is best known for creating luminous make-up that’s subtle and youthful. It’s no wonder she’s a firm favourite of Kate Bosworth, Gisele Bündchen, and Miranda Kerr. Here she reveals the failsafe anti-ageing tricks she swears by.

1. Never Be Afraid Of Oils

The industry has led us to believe that oil is not good for the skin, but this is not true. More and more dermatologists are recommending mature skin types use them as part of their skincare routine. As we age, our skin needs hydration and reacts so much better to products that are oil based rather than water based. It is very important to make the right choices when choosing oils. Jojoba oil is closest to sebum (skin), buriti oil has very high levels of vitamin A and beta-carotene, while coconut oil is both anti-fungal and antibacterial. The latter also removes all traces of makeup while moisturising the skin, brows and lashes.

2. Exercise Your Face As Well As Your Body

Your face can start to sag if you don't stimulate it enough. When you apply your make up, use a firm brush, and work it in to you skin so you stimulate the lymphatic flow and oxygenation of your skin, resulting in a beautifully plump complexion.

3. Minimise Your Foundation

Remember products containing alcohols and clay are drying agents so try to avoid them. Opt for an oil-based foundation and concealer instead. When you put too much makeup on mature skin  it can sit in fine lines and wrinkles and ages the appearance. The more sheer the better, as it will result in a more youthful complexion. Remember we want to put moisture back into the skin, not take it away. Dampen the skin with clean water and add a few drops of oil, letting it absorb into the skin. Then use a skin enhancing foundation for a youthful glow.

4. Avoid Using Powder

Powder causes both premature ageing to the skin over time and immediate visual ageing due the fact it dehydrates the skin. The magic recipe is to use creams not powders. If one has excess oil (which is anti-ageing in itself) then a light dusting of powder is suggested only in the oily areas of the t-zone where overly oily skin can be considered a problem. Look  that are oil absorbing as these don’t dehydrate the skin. I also recommend using a puff brush for minimal application – it provides a much better finish than a brush as it doesn’t deposit too much.

5. Only Use Powder On Your Brows

Brows are best enhanced by using a powder for a more natural, refined look. Unlike powder, pencils and gels will collect in the pores (which tend to get larger as we age). These products tend to be too heavy, thick and usually too dark, so much so that the results look very fake. A good anti-ageing tip is to never square off your brows in the front. It pulls the brows and eyes together resulting in one looking stern and hard, instead of natural and youthful.

6. Don’t Line Your Lips With The Same Shade As Your Lipstick

Most women do this, but it can look quite fake and harsh. This is because your lipstick will fade, leaving behind a bright coloured line around the mouth that looks rather cheap and ageing. Instead, enhance the lips with a pencil that is natural and matches your lip colour (petroleum, silicone synthetic ones tend to bleed). From there you can apply your desired shade to your actual lips. It will look and fade so much more naturally without the awful stencilled outline. Don’t be afraid of a slick of colour either, it will always perk up your complexion.

7. Make Cream Blush Formulas Your Go To

Using a cream blush on your skin will instantly make you look younger. When applying your blush, never take the colour too low on the face. I use the base of the nostrils as a benchmark and never apply colour below that line, otherwise it tends to pull the face down which is not flattering on anybody. Applying it higher lifts the face up resulting in a more youthful appearance. I also like to apply the blush very high on the cheeks, to the point where it literally meets the bottom of your under-eye bags. Doing this actually lessens the look of dark circles as it takes away the lighter colour of the skin between the two. Blush applied like contour is so 1980’s and extremely ageing, giving a gaunt like appearance to the shape of the face.

8. Raise Your Face To The Light

Never lower you face down to avoid light in any room, make sure you lift the face and welcome the light, especially when applying make-up. Every model knows this trick. Light on the face is what makes you beautiful, not shadows. To see how this works is simple. Take a mirror and look down into it out of the light, then look at your face facing the light with the mirror held high and you will see the big difference…Magic!

9. Avoid Dark Eye Make-up

Dark make-up can be very harsh, giving the appearance of ageing, dry eyes. Again, try creamy formulas as these give the overall appearance of a youthful eye. Look to products that are light-reflecting and subtle, avoid anything with thick glitter particles as these will just fall and spread round your whole face. Another benefit of cream formula is they nourish the eyelids rather than dry them out..

10. And Finally…

Avoid today’s ‘long-lasting’ make-up as it is created with drying agents that suck the life out of your skin for the sake of added time throughout the day. Add time to the skin itself with natural and organic healing ingredients rather than dead synthetic chemicals.

SL recommends: Kjaer Weis Foundation; Ilia Lipstick, Dr. Hauschka Foundation
