Meet The Affordable Skincare Brand Doctors Swear By

CeraVe arrived in the UK just over two years ago and has quickly proved popular with both consumers and industry experts. Developed with dermatologists, it's the no-frills, results-driven skincare brand that has really accessible price points and is suitable for most skin types – no wonder sales continue to surge globally. To find out how its formulas work and why they’re deemed so efficacious, we asked Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme to tell us more…

Created in partnership with CERAVE SKINCARE

Let’s start with the basics of CeraVe – what makes it so effective?

I love the scientific approach CeraVe takes. It focuses on maintaining the barrier function of the skin. This is key because a healthy barrier is paramount to a great complexion. By focusing on ingredients that restore, hydrate and improve it, you’re guaranteed great results that benefit all skin types. Two of my favourite ingredients are ceramides and niacinamide – both of these are included throughout CeraVe’s product range. Plus, the price point is unbeatable for such impressive formulas.

You mention ceramides – why are these so useful in skincare?

Ceramides are lipids and part of the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of your skin’s epidermis) and they ensure your skin barrier functions correctly. In short, they work as your body’s natural moisturiser, preventing dehydration and dryness. They help skin hold onto moisture more effectively, so we feel smoother and more hydrated. It’s for this reason ceramides are used throughout the CeraVe range, and why they’re one of my hero ingredients as a dermatologist.

Which one CeraVe product would you recommend to everyone?

The Foaming Cleanser for Normal To Oily Skin is a must-try. It gently lifts off dirt debris, make-up and SPF, leaving your skin feeling satisfyingly clean. The addition of hyaluronic acid and ceramides lock in moisture, so your skin is never left feeling stripped or tight. It is such a great all-rounder cleanser – especially for oily skin types.

The MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT of skincare is the technology and science behind it – you get both at a high level with CeraVe.

Why is hyaluronic acid important in CeraVe’s skincare?

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. This means it can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, so it helps to pull and lock moisture down into the skin. This is a great ingredient, no matter what your skin type, as we all need hydration. It’s found in several of CeraVe’s formulas, as is glycerine, which is another humectant that lubricates the skin, thanks to its emollient properties.

CeraVe’s SA Cleanser is hugely popular – how does it work?

The SA Cleanser has such a lovely feel. With 0.5% salicylic acid, it’s gentle enough to be used every day – even twice a day if you have oilier skin. It’s really popular as you can use it to treat the body too, slowly smoothing the appearance of rough and bumpy skin, as well as conditions like keratosis pilaris. The key benefit here is you get the exfoliation of salicylic acid alongside the hydrating effects of both hyaluronic acid and ceramides.

Which products do you rate for different skin types?

If your skin is oily, you should cleanse twice a day. I recommend you have a daily go-to cleanser, and bring in a salicylic acid one daily as well. A non-comedogenic moisturiser like CeraVe’s Day Lotion is essential for keeping shine and oiliness at bay.

With dry skin, the goal is getting and retaining moisture. Start your routine with a gentle cleanser and ensure you’re using a formula that doesn’t strip. Follow up with a cream that helps to protect and restore the moisture barrier of your skin – look out for ingredients like glycerine, hyaluronic acid and ceramides, all of which can be found in CeraVe’s range.

Finally, how does CeraVe stay so effective at such great price points?

The most important aspect of skincare is the technology and science behind it – you get both at a high level with CeraVe. Your skincare doesn’t have to cost the earth. My rule of thumb and advice to all is to follow the science, not the price. If the science is sound, that’s when you should invest. You can save on moisturisers; just ensure they are suited to your skin type, then instead splurge on serums or more targeted treatments that tackle issues such as pigmentation.
