Nana Acheampong

Fashion Editor & Broadcaster

Both of my parents are from Ghana, and we have a family home in Accra. I have lots of extended family and friends in both Accra and Kumasi, so I visit at least once a year, usually around Easter or Christmas, and every trip is pure joy. The weather is always incredible, the people are some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet and the nightlife is unmatched.

If you’re visiting Accra, the capital, expect to feel the vibrancy of an energy from the moment you land. It has a bustling atmosphere and there’s always something to do and see. From shops to markets, beaches to chop bars – and the ever-growing culture and arts scene – there’s no chance of getting bored.

EAT & DRINK

Kozo

Kozo has a modern vibe that blends Asian fusion cuisine with a sophisticated nightlife experience. The vibe is stylish and intimate, with dim lighting, lush greenery and cool décor – it’s a real oasis in the city. Make sure to always book in advance for dinner.

Buka

Buka is one of my favourite restaurants in Accra. The fully West African menu focuses on rich, flavourful Ghanaian and Nigerian dishes like jollof rice, banku with tilapia, fufu with light soup, egusi soup and goat pepper soup. It also has a local, down to earth feel.

India Agyeman

Social Media Assistant

I’m Ghanaian by heritage and spent many years living in the country. I attended an international school before moving back to the UK for university but I’ve gone back every Christmas – and often for Easter holidays too. Ghana still feels like home.

Accra, the capital, is full of energy and ambition. The city pulses with youthful drive – people hustle with passion and purpose, and it’s incredibly inspiring. There’s a vibrancy here that I haven’t found anywhere else. While Accra is evolving fast, it remains deeply connected to its roots. Other parts of Ghana feel more peaceful and laidback, but they still carry that same resilient, hustler spirit.

EAT & DRINK

Kukun

Kukun is a lovely cafe in Osu, in the heart of Accra. The interiors are so chic – there’s a café and bar on the ground floor where you can order delicious dishes – with office spaces to rent on the upper floors. It’s also one of the few co-working spaces in Accra, so there’s a creative vibe in the café.

Visit KUKUN.CO

Jamestown Coffee Company

You’ll find some of the best coffee in town at this shop in Jamestown. It offers a variety of dishes, from traditional to continental – I like spending mornings there to work.

Bella Afrik

This restaurant in Osu might just be one of my favourite spots in Accra. Imagine the perfect fusion of Ghanaian and Italian flavours – it has the best of both worlds, everything you love about Italian food but with a Ghanaian touch. My favourite dish is the seafood platter. It's a great place for drinks, too, with a fun vibe during the day. It’s also great for pre-drinks before you brave the rest of Accra’s nightlife scene.

Visit BELLAAFRIK.COM

Santoku

Close to the airport’s residential area, this is my favourite restaurant in Accra. It’s a lovely Japanese spot at the base of the Villagio Apartments. I’ve celebrated every birthday there with a big group of friends and family in the private room. It’s a tradition that’s become really special to me.

Pâte á Chou

This French bistro in Labone offers classic French dishes and patisserie treats. It’s simple, yet the quality of ingredients and the dishes it serves are outstanding, again with a slight Ghanaian touch.

Skybar

This is one of the best bars in Accra. At the top of the Villagio Apartments it has breathtaking views of the city – arguably the best views you’ll get anywhere in Accra. It’s super vibey and they serve food late into the night, which is always a plus, especially as everything in Accra starts so late. Even in the intense 32°C heat, you’ll feel a refreshing breeze.

@IndiaAgy

Front/Back

You’ll probably find me here three or four nights a week. It hosts the best events, openings and workshops focused on fashion and art. The music ranges from Afrobeats to R&B, house to techno, so expect a bit of everything, including dancers on tables and bars. It has both indoor and outdoor sections. Come 2am, everyone is here.

La Boracha

La Boracha in Labone is a fun Mexican bar. It hosts salsa nights on Tuesdays, ‘pub’ quizzes on Wednesdays and gets crazy during weekends. Expect a Ghanaian take on Mexican interiors, vibrant colours throughout, an extensive alcohol selection and great drinks. The tequila shots here are the best.

The Honeysuckle Pub

I’ve said ‘my favourite’ so many times but this genuinely is one of my top places on this list. Next to La Boracha, it’s a traditional English pub that serves great food and has every beer, lager and drink you could ask for, as well as great cocktails. It’s the first place my friends and I visit when we land in Accra.

SHOP

Christie Brown

My mum shops here so often she’s now one of their VIP customers. Christie Brown in Osu is a luxury ready-to-wear women’s brand. It uses a lot of African prints combined with more solid colours and fabrics to create amazing pieces.

Free The Youth

Free The Youth is one of the coolest streetwear brands to come out of Accra. Founded by a group of young creatives with a bold vision, it’s the very definition of the hustler spirit I mentioned earlier. The brand blends contemporary fashion with African heritage, and it’s collaborated with major names like Places+Faces and received support from icons like Virgil Abloh. The designs are vibrant, full of colour and bursting with energy – offering a fresh take on style for Ghana’s Gen Z.

Burdah

Another family favourite is a brand founded by Hajar, an Accra-based Moroccan designer who creates beautiful kaftans and dresses that blend Moroccan and Ghanaian styles. Her pieces feature traditional, ethically handmade fabrics and striking prints. Each design feels thoughtful, unique and deeply cultural. It’s a must-buy when in Ghana – and makes for a great gift.

Mole National Park

This is Ghana’s largest wildlife reserve, located in the north. It’s home to elephants, antelopes, baboons and hundreds of bird species. Visitors can take guided walking or jeep safaris for an up-close experience with nature, all set against a backdrop of savannah and scenic landscapes.
