A Pocket Guide To Miami

A blend of Latin American and Caribbean influences makes Miami one of America’s coolest cities – pair that with great restaurants and a tropical climate, and it’s easy to see why it attracts so many visitors every year. Here are just a few of the places you’ll want to bookmark ahead of your own trip…
1Hotel South Beach, Miami

SLEEP

South Beach is the natural destination for Miami first-timers or those looking to fly and flop. Every major hotel group has a presence on the strip but none so imposing and desirable as the 1 Hotel South Beach the vast eco-spot that caters to families, couples and groups in town for the nightlife scene. A guests-only rooftop pool with panoramic sea views is the hotel's jewel in its crown but a vast lower deck pool area, buzzing sushi restaurant, labyrinthine fairy-lit bar area and impossibly comfy beds – as well as a Bamford spa – are all contenders for the hotel's best feature. Breakfast is up there with one of the best spreads we've tried and the location puts you in prime position for long coastal walks and visiting some of the city's top restaurants and bars.

On the other side of town, the Four Seasons Miami will give even the most seasoned of Miami visitors a fresh perspective on the city. Located in Brickell, the cool downtown hub that houses lively warehouse-style eateries and slick, urban apartments, it's the epitome of understated comfort – think impeccable service, glossy interiors and a show-stopping pool complete with floating palm tree islands connected by hammocks. Suites tower over the city and offer mega views, whilst a pool menu filled with the freshest fruit, colourful poke bowls and chunky ice cream sandwiches will keep adults and little ones amused for hours.

EAT & DRINK

Miami’s dining scene is as diverse as you’d expect – from buzzy Latin restaurants to relaxed neighbourhood spots, there’s something for everyone. Book ahead to secure a table at Sunny’s, one of the city’s hottest restaurants right now. Having recently reopened after a slick renovation, guests can now sit on the terrace with its twinkling lights, or nab a table in the main dining room, complete with smart interiors and dim lighting. Steaks, caesar salads, grilled seafood and fresh pasta are served with generous sides and crowd-pleasing cocktails. Another newcomer to know is Shiso, which bills itself as an ‘Asian smokehouse’. With its industrial-chic interiors (think graffitied walls contrasted with contemporary lighting), diners come here for sushi and live music from DJs. Other dishes from the menu are cooked over hot grills – think ribeye steak with corn bread and broccolini.

Another fail-safe choice is Blue Ribbon Sushi (the group has various sites around the US) where sushi platters feature classic hand rolls and sashimi with less traditional offerings of spicy lobster rolls and fried oysters. Then there’s Maty’s, a buzzy Peruvian restaurant where you can enjoy salads, ceviches and street food-inspired dishes in its light and airy dining room. There’s a daily happy hour from 5pm to 7pm, too.  You should also bookmark Osaka (which also has outposts in locations like São Paulo and Bogota). This Peruvian-Japanese restaurant serves some of the best food in the city, with flavoursome, beautifully presented dishes like zingy ceviches, tiraditos and nigiri with miso lobster, wagyu beef and more.

Over in Downtown Miami, Vietnamese restaurant Tâm Tâm has a similar vibe, but with a slightly more laidback atmosphere. Now one of the most popular spots in the city, what began as a pop-up is now a cool brick-and-mortar restaurant with a Michelin Bib Gourmand to its name. Visit for dishes like shrimp crudo, tamarind glazed ribs, goat curry and grilled whole fish.

Miami Sound Bar
Terras

For Italian-inspired dishes head to Boia De by Buena Vista. The restaurant holds a Michelin star, but the atmosphere is relaxed, and guests are treated to hearty, but delicately presented, plates like oxtail ravioli, crispy polenta with ricotta and rabbit pappardelle. There’s a nice low-ABV cocktail list, as well as an extensive wine selection. During a long weekend, you’ll also want to book a table at Mandolin, a bistro with a menu inspired by the coastal towns of Greece and Turkey. Housed in a restored 1940s home with a beautiful garden and outdoor patio, the restaurant showcases local ingredients and Aegean techniques, with mezes, large sharing salads, flatbreads and seafood dishes like lobster orzo all on offer.

When you’re after a quick lunch or afternoon snack, visit Miami Slice, one of the city’s best pizza spots. NYC-style slices and pizza pies are served with flavoursome dips, like hot honey or three cheese. Meanwhile, Zak The Baker is a kosher bakery and café that makes traditional artisan breads using natural leavens. You can stop here for lunch or order a flaky pastry or glazed doughnut from its counter of ever-changing goods.

You’ll also find great pizza at La Natural, a contemporary restaurant and wine bar in Little River. There’s more of an upmarket feel here, though guests can drop in for snacks and a glass or two of natural or low-intervention wine. Then there’s Cafe La Trova, a Miami institution in Little Havana. The Cuban restaurant and cocktail bar celebrates the rich culture of Cuba through its authentic Latin dishes, zesty cocktails and live music performances. The space is filled with colourful decor, retro furnishings and vintage Cuban memorabilia. Terras is another fun spot for drinks. This rooftop bar has great city views and is filled with tropical plants and greenery. You can then continue the night at Ray’s Hometown Bar or Miami Sound Bar, both of which offer live music, themed nights and flowing cocktails.

SHOP

When you’re ready to shop, Coconut Grove is one of the city’s smartest shopping areas. Known for its laidback, yet upscale vibe, the Grove is home to a curated mix of chic boutiques and unique stores you won't find elsewhere. Don’t miss the LoveShackFancy store, where you’ll find bohemian-inspired pieces in its cool showroom – think floaty dresses and accessories that transport you straight into holiday mode.

For contemporary womenswear, visit Simonett. Founded by creative Simonett Pereira, it has a curated selection of clothing and accessories from brands like Tigra Tigra, Gimaguas and Adriana Degreas. Just a short stroll away, Mrkt offers an edgier selection of handpicked fashion and lifestyle items. Look out for streetwear, graphic tees and limited-edition sneakers. Dale Zine is another cool streetwear store that regularly hosts exhibitions. You’ll also find art prints, homeware and vinyl on its shelves.

VISIT

Miami benefits from a tropical climate, so you’ll want to spend time at some of its beaches. South Beach is Miami’s iconic playground, famous for its art deco architecture, palm-lined streets, and turquoise waters. Venture further out and you’ll find quieter spots like Lummus Park Beach, Mid-Beach and Crandon Park. R&R can also be spent at one of the city’s many luxe wellness centres, including Fuze House, which offers hot Pilates, strength training and ballet classes.

For a cultural fix start your journey at Perez Art Museum, which showcases modern and contemporary art with a particular focus on the Americas. The Institute of Contemporary Art is also worth a visit. It houses thought-provoking works in an ultra-modern setting, featuring both established and emerging artists. Just around the corner, Superblue offers an immersive experience, where large-scale installations and interactive exhibits make you feel part of the art itself. A good option if you’re travelling with kids is the Wynwood Walls street art museum, where the art comes to life in the form of huge, colourful murals that have now become an iconic part of Miami's cultural landscape. Finally, for a different kind of experience, the Miami Open is steadily gaining prestige. It takes place at the end of each March with the sport’s biggest stars competing for the cup.
