An Insider’s Guide To Bristol

With its rich history, booming food culture and independent nature, Bristol has become one of the UK’s most popular destinations for a long weekend. One newcomer on its scene is Dongnae, a neighbourhood Korean restaurant owned by couple Kyu Jeong Jeon and Duncan Robertson, who met while working at Michelin-starred L’Atelier du Joël Robuchon in Paris. Following nine years in Korea, the pair moved to Bristol and launched Seoul-inspired Bokman, before Dongnae opened its doors last year. Here, Kyu shares her favourite restaurants, shops and places to see in and around the city…

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

Interlude Coffee

Out of five or six world-class coffee shops in Bristol, I've chosen Interlude Coffee on St Michael's Hill. Apart from its regularly changing and always excellent selection of coffees, the inimitable owner Laurence is also a wine buff and the team has a well-curated array of wines to drink in or take away, as well as regular pouring sessions hosted by various industry friends.

Jeevan Sweets

My kids will kill for the legendary samosas at our go-to takeaway. Everything is so fresh, wholesome and tasty – we're incredibly lucky to have this gem in our neighbourhood.

Wangs

We were so happy when Sach and Sandy started doing pop-ups in their amazing self-built space just down the road from our first restaurant, Bokman. Fast forward to the present and they've recruited dumpling afficionado Emily (aka @Xin.Xin.Chan) to run the kitchen and they're going from strength to strength. Whether it's the signature Taiwanese beef noodles, chilli oil wontons or my favourite dish, the homemade turnip cakes with house XO, everything is a standout, and the cocktails are special too.

El Colmado

This gem sells an amazing selection of Spanish deli stuff on Gloucester Road – and it’s run by everyone's favourite shopkeeper, the gorgeous David Pavon. Cheese, jamon, chorizo, olives, beans, biscuits… I can't leave this shop without an armful of delicious groceries, and I'm normally planning my next visit before I finish them off.

Marmo

Centred on fantastic produce cooked to perfection in a beautiful building, Marmo is run by Cosmo and Lily, who really have something special going on here in the centre of the city. The steak tartare is our current favourite, and their wine list is always on point.

Farro

It's still our favourite bakery in Bristol (and there's a lot of worthy competition). Brad and his team consistently wow me with their classics and new creations, as well as the excellent coffee and friendly service. Do not miss the panela and bourbon tart.

The Pony

Josh and Holly have recently repurposed the lovely pub just outside Bristol Place into the ultimate country restaurant, complete with a market garden where they source all the veg on the menu. We’ve only had the chance to try the incredible family-style Sunday lunch (highly recommended, plus there’s great dog walking nearby), but I can’t wait to go back for a midweek dinner.

Wilsons

This one might be a bit biased, since owners Jan and Mary are friends and neighbours (both at home and work), but you needn’t just rely on my recommendation – they’re in every top 100 list in the UK and have a well-deserved Michelin Green star. You always feel so welcome and the whole restaurant is imbued with passion and warmth.

WHAT TO DO

Bristol School of Yoga

Before we owned restaurants, I was fanatical about ashtanga yoga, and it kills me that I no longer have time to practise at the Bristol School of Yoga in St Pauls, which is a serene, sunlit studio that instantly creates a sense of peace. My main draw was always the teacher Christine, who is so warm and welcoming, making you feel relaxed and included whether you're an experienced ashtangi or a complete beginner.

Bristol Aesthetics

I do enjoy a visit here from time to time as a treat – it offers amazing, pampering skincare treatments. It’s always a very welcome time out from the hecticness of life, plus you come out feeling super fresh and rejuvenated.

Gloucester Road Books

I love this place – it’s a great little indie bookstore. I could happily spend hours in here perusing the shelves, and they always give great recommendations.

Holm

We love to escape the city from time to time and head somewhere lovely with great food. Nicholas Balfe’s restaurant Holm, in nearby South Petherton, is a firm favourite and not too long a drive out. It also has some lovely bedrooms.
