where to LIVE

Whether you’re after a quieter life away from the capital or are simply looking for more space and better-value accommodation, One Maidenhead is the new residential development to know about. With a friendly community feel and options for every type of resident, it’s the first build-to-rent community of its size in Berkshire, creating more than 400 new homes on the doorstep of the Elizabeth Line.

According to the latest UK Vitality report, Maidenhead has been named of the UK’s top five healthiest places to live, with good air quality and access to green space. One Maidenhead itself has been designed with wellness and sustainability in mind for renters who are actively choosing a green escape from city living.

Residents can choose to rent one, two or three-bedroom apartments – either furnished or unfurnished – and you’ll also have the option to welcome pets or to decorate. Apartments are modern, finished to a high standard, and light and bright, with open floorplans, spacious balconies and access to an abundance of leafy landscaped gardens. Plus, there are numerous roof terraces overlooking the sweeping greenery of the surrounding area. Here’s what else you can expect as a resident:

  • A large co-working space so you can work from home.
  • A fully equipped gym with brand-new equipment.
  • Spacious communal lounges with shuffleboards and more – expect resident events and regular social activities.
  • A dedicated on-site resident and maintenance team. There’s on-site security too, plus a parcel collection service.
  • Transparent and flexible long-term leases.
  • Secure bike parking with space for 500 bikes.
  • Free Wi-Fi, included in the price of your rent.

Seasonality

where to EAT & DRINK

From Michelin Guide-recommended restaurants to cosy neighbourhood cafés, Maidenhead residents have a wealth of dining options on their doorstep. One of the best in the area is Seasonality, owned and headed up by husband-and-wife duo Wesley and Francesca Smalley. It started out as a produce shop, before the team launched the restaurant in 2021 to excellent reviews. As its name suggests, it’s all about creating beautifully presented dishes with the best seasonal produce. Current menu highlights include marinated beef tartare with pepper romesco and pork crackling; duck with cherry hoi sin, smoked beetroot and celeriac; and peach crumble. The team also offers at-home boxes, with three courses costing just £32pp.

Another excellent option is The Crown at Burchetts Green, a restaurant and pub owned by chef Dominic Chapman (who also owns The Beehive at White Waltham). It’s known for British dishes served in a relaxed setting. Dinner might be wild rabbit lasagne, mushroom taglioni or roast halibut, while Sundays are all about roasts served with all the trimmings. Ten minutes down the road in Bray, you’ll find some of the UK’s most acclaimed restaurants such as Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck and The Hinds Head.

Back in Maidenhead, there are plenty of more casual options, including Bombay Story Indian Kitchen & Bar, which is loved by locals for its authentic Indian dishes. Open for breakfast through to dinner, its à la carte menu features street food, dishes cooked in the tandoor, biryanis and curries. Another favourite is Sauce and Flour, a charming Italian offering sharing plates, fresh pasta made on site daily, and knockout tiramisu. It’s the perfect spot for a negroni and a bowl of ragu, mopped up with warm focaccia.

Over on Queen Street, The Borough is a restaurant and wine shop worth popping to for sharing plates and low-intervention or organic wines. The ground floor serves tapas, while the newly opened 16-cover restaurant on the first floor is open on Fridays and Saturdays for larger dishes. If you’re after this kind of casual dining, you’ll also like ToMo Tankovna, a buzzy brewery and restaurant which serves Czech beers and European wines with huge cheese toasties and other savoury treats. There are large screens showing sports, plus an outdoor area for sunny afternoons. Residents are also spoilt for choice when it comes to old-school pubs – one of the best is The Belgian Arms where you’ll find local ales, hearty pub classics, a spacious beer garden, and a welcoming atmosphere.

things TO DO

Maidenhead is brimming with green spaces and historical landmarks waiting to be explored. A leisurely walk along the Thames Path offers picturesque views and a peaceful escape into nature – and a route towards the villages of Cookham, Marlow and Bray, with their great restaurants and scenic parks. The Maidenhead Waterway project has also transformed the town-centre channels into an accessible waterway that's now a vibrant, central hub for activities like boating, cycling and paddleboarding.

For a dose of culture, Norden Farm Centre for the Arts hosts a variety of performances, from live music and theatre to film screenings and workshops. And Maidenhead Golf Club makes for a relaxing day on the course, while the Braywick Leisure Centre offers swimming, sports facilities, and a mix of fitness classes for all ages.

A short drive will take you to Cliveden House, a beautiful National Trust property with impressive gardens and woodland trails. Or you can head to Windsor, where you’ll find the historic castle, countless family friendly activities, and a selection of quaint shops and cafés. Eton is also within easy reach. Meanwhile, families will love a trip to Odds Farm Park, where kids can interact with a variety of animals, enjoy tractor rides, and play in the adventure areas. Braywick Nature Centre offers another family friendly outing with its diverse habitats.
