Singita Lebombo, South Africa

Expansive windows frame views of the valley and river below, while earthy tones and natural textures create a contemporary yet calming feel. The lodge has 15 loft-style suites, with communal spaces designed for lingering: enjoy wine tastings celebrating South African cultivars in the Wine Studio, settle beside the fire in the Winter Lounge or spend time at the Long Bar as the light changes. THE ABOVE-GROUND EXPERIENCE

Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River, Zambia

Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River marks the brand’s first safari property in Africa, opening after three years in development. Set on the banks of the Kafue River in Zambia’s largest national park, the 13-key camp combines African modernism with a strong focus on conservation and wellness. Elevated 3.5m above the ground on rosewood platforms, the camp is designed to protect wildlife corridors while offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness. Hippos, elephants, large predators, antelope and more than 500 bird species inhabit the area. Its standout accommodation is the collection of three 110sq m Horizon Terrace Suites, suspended 14.3m above the ground and reached via a glass elevator. The wider setting is also undergoing a period of renewal, with African Parks and the Zambian government working together to strengthen protection and support wildlife recovery across Kafue National Park.

THE MAJOR REFURB

&Beyond Phinda Vlei Lodge, South Africa

Reopened this summer following a complete redesign, &Beyond Phinda Vlei Lodge offers a fresh take on an intimate safari stay. Set within the 29,866-hectare Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, the six-suite lodge overlooks a seasonal wetland, or vlei, where wildlife gathers throughout the day. Its position between rare sand forest and the wetland has informed the refurbishment, which introduces expanded suites, refreshed interiors and enhanced guest spaces. Each suite now features a private pool, sala and deck overlooking the landscape. Twice-daily game drives offer the chance to encounter the Big Five and more elusive species, including the suni antelope, while guided nature walks and sand forest e-biking provide alternative ways to explore. Guests can also book in-suite wellness treatments, photographic safaris and conservation experiences supporting rhino, elephant and pangolin research. Beyond the reserve, coastal excursions and visits to neighbouring Zulu communities offer further insight into the region.

THE GROUP-WIDE LAUNCHES

Auberge Safari

Auberge Safari has introduced several developments this season, including a new helicopter offer, an updated camp and the launch of a permanent tented property. The Sky’s Yours promotion includes complimentary helicopter excursions for qualifying stays: book four consecutive nights at a Chem Chem property, Mwiba Lodge or Mwiba Plains for a 30-minute flight. Stays of seven nights or more, including an Auberge Safari Serengeti camp and at least two nights at a Chem Chem or Mwiba property, qualify for a 60-minute excursion with a scenic picnic. Meanwhile, Nyasi, the vintage-inspired camp in the northern Serengeti’s Lamai Wedge, has been refurbished with new gym and spa tents, plus elevated wooden decks for guest tents. On 15th December, Mwiba Plains is due to open in the Greater Mwiba Protected Wildlife Area. Designed around the Great Migration’s calving season, from mid-January to March, guests will have exclusive access to a private guide and vehicle throughout – without the visitor volumes that descend on the wider ecosystem during the annual event.

THE HIGHLANDS HOTEL

Set across 11 acres of terraced hillside on the historic Sutherland Estate in Ella, the all-inclusive retreat comprises 15 standalone villas and a restored colonial-era manor house, which serves as the main house and culinary hub. An infinity pool and contemporary spa complete the offering, while views stretch across emerald tea plantations, rolling hills and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. Nearby tea estates provide a glimpse into the island’s long-established Ceylon tea-making traditions. Guests can also watch mountain trains cross the 1919 brick-and-stone viaduct from the property.

THE DINING HOTSPOT

Boscia At Tswalu, South Africa

In the Kalahari, celebrated South African chef Luke Dale Roberts has opened Boscia, an ambitious new restaurant on Tswalu’s 118,000-hectare private reserve. Built into the earth beneath a century-old farmhouse and surrounded by shepherd’s trees, it takes its name from the hardy tree species whose roots can reach 68m underground in search of water. The landscape informs the entire experience, with a menu shaped by regional ingredients, preservation techniques and the distinctive flavours of the Kalahari. Guests begin in the historic farmhouse, with snacks and cocktails before descending into a root cellar that doubles as a gallery, library and working larder. Shelves lined with fermented, pickled and preserved ingredients reveal how the kitchen responds to its challenging environment. Throughout the five-course experience, the menu will serve the likes of venison, tsamma melons, Kalahari salt, local dates and wild rosemary. Tswalu is home to three camps: Motse, Loapi and the exclusive-use Tarkuni homestead. Every guest is guaranteed a private vehicle, guide and tracker, with unlimited time in the field.

THE FLIGHT ROUTES

London Gatwick To Kilimanjaro & Zanzibar

From 29th May 2027, British Airways is set to launch direct flights from London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, making Tanzania’s northern safari circuit more accessible for UK travellers. The new routes could make it easier to combine a safari with time on the coast, particularly during the peak summer travel season. One option to consider is Enduata’s Wild Wakati Camp, which opened in early 2026 in Tanzania’s Central Serengeti. Set on a 160,000sq m private site, 15km from the nearest road, the low-impact camp has ten tents with expansive views across the plains and access to the Great Migration. Designed without concrete foundations, it can be removed without leaving a permanent trace on the landscape. Tents and much of the bespoke furniture are made in Tanzania, while local staff, including members of the Maasai community, are part of the team.

THE GORILLA EXPERIENCE

Ngaga Lodge, Republic of Congo

At Ngaga Lodge in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, Kamba Africa has introduced a 70m canopy walk offering a different perspective on the Republic of Congo’s rainforest. Suspended 9m to 13m above the forest floor, the walkway takes guests into the middle canopy, the same vertical world inhabited by the region’s western lowland gorillas. The experience adds a new dimension to stays at Ngaga Lodge, which is known for its intimate gorilla encounters and immersive rainforest expeditions. For an even more atmospheric perspective, new nocturnal canopy walks allow guests to explore after dark, when unfamiliar sounds and hidden wildlife bring the forest to life. Kamba Africa is one of the few private operators granted concessions within Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Its approach combines intimate accommodation with opportunities to understand the Congo Basin’s remarkable biodiversity, offering travellers a more immersive way to engage with one of the world’s most important rainforest environments.
