A Fashion Insider’s Guide To Amsterdam

Founder and creative director of Essen The Label, Marre Muijs, splits her time between her hometown Amsterdam, and Melbourne – where she has lived since 2008. As a Dutch native, she knows all the local go-tos, with her stylish, sustainable values extending beyond her personal wardrobe and brand to her favourite places to eat, travel and explore. WHERE TO STAY

Rika Studios/Maison Rika

It’s part boutique, part gallery and part beautifully designed two-bedroom apartment that you can actually book. The whole place has this incredibly warm, intimate and authentic feel. Staying here feels like a natural extension of the store’s aesthetic – it’s just stunning. If you ever visit, make sure to grab a copy of the Rika Studios Paper before you leave.

Pulitzer Amsterdam

This hotel is stunning. I love that it has maintained its rich vintage charm. It's located right along the Canal Ring and tucked inside on the canal front is Jansz. If you’re curious to try modern Dutch food, Jansz is the place to go. You’ll get a real feel for local bistro classics in a setting that feels polished yet genuinely welcoming. Honestly, it doesn't matter if I'm there with family or friends; there is a cosy corner for date nights, plus great bars and terrace tables made for long lunches with shared dishes on silver plates.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

Café Binnenvisser

This is one of my go-tos in Amsterdam. On the corner of Bilderdijkstraat, it's a no-nonsense bistro that has great food and wine. Cosy during the cooler months and a sunlit terrace in the summer, it's a must-try for that local neighbourhood atmosphere.

Cue

A perfect listening and cocktail bar on the Utrechtsestraat – think moody lighting, cocktails and a room that slowly settles into the night. Perfect for popping in for a drink, which often  turns into settling in for the evening.

Mesa Mesa

Mesa Mesa is great for Spanish tapas – it's cosy, fresh and it’s a bonus if you manage to snag a seat at the chef's table.

Louf

It's hard to visit Amsterdam without having a taste of oven-fresh bread and delicious pastries. Louf is the spot for homemade baked goodies. The croissants are unmissable.

UnCommon

A wonderful, innovative place that does fermentation and makes great wine. The ferments often use local ingredients but also employ interesting techniques to create something really special. Everything is fermented: the wine is fermented, the coffee is fermented, the pastries are fermented and the food is fermented… You get the picture.

Two-story

I love places with a point of view and Two-story is a combination of gallery, café and concept store. It’s my favourite place for a delicious coffee; it feels like a weekend morning any day I’m there.

Kafe Kontrast

Kafé Kontrast brings two distinct food cultures (Indonesian and Scandinavian) together on one plate. The result is elevated comfort food that feels familiar in some ways and completely new in others, shaped by craft, curiosity and flavour.

De Kas

A very special destination in the east of Amsterdam, this is one of the first farm-to-table restaurants globally. It’s set in a greenhouse that was originally built to supply other gardens in the city. Everything is picked in the morning and served in the afternoon.

Camarat

For an evening that turns dinner into drinks into dancing, this great restaurant in Amsterdam Noord is the spot. Everything is cooked on a charcoal grill which, paired with a local wine, is just chef’s kiss. The space itself is what I’d describe as warehouse chic. It even includes a fountain.

WHERE TO SHOP

Moise Store

Moise Store has a curated edit of designers all under one roof. Shopping can be overwhelming, but when I go to Moise, I know I’m walking into a considered and timeless point of view.

Laan

Laan is one of those stores where you’ll find pieces you’ll likely only see once and never again. The store is almost like a museum of eras of designer pieces.

Visit LAANAMSTERDAM.COM

Frozen Fountain

It is difficult to describe this place as a mere furniture shop. Frozen Fountain is more like a gallery of young designers and each corner offers a zest of something unique. It's the sort of store you won’t know what you’re looking for until you're there. It stocks some of my favourite Dutch designers like Floris Wubben and Maarten Baas.

REYÈM

REYÈM is an Amsterdam-based brand that adds a bit of polish and really understands elevated everyday pieces. They really capture that chic on-the-go style that you can put on without checking the mirror again.

Ensō Vintage, Jordaan

As a disciple of the conscious consumption movement, vintage is always on my radar. Ensō Vintage’s offering is highly curated – the collection is hand-selected by founders Andrea and Liseth, who pair vintage designer pieces with new, upcycled collections.

Nho Girl

A go-to for high-end curated vintage, this is an appointment-only showroom, which already sets it apart from the usual rummage-through-the-racks experience. Here, you get the space and time to actually look properly. If you can't make it in person, they also drop new pieces online every Monday at 7pm, so it's worth keeping an eye out.

WHAT TO SEE & DO

Stretch & Fold

If you need a total reset, Stretch & Fold is where you need to go. Although it isn't the easiest to reach, it's well worth the trip over to Amsterdam Noord for yoga, a rooftop pool and sauna session. After that, you can’t miss the homemade ferments at the café inside.

Visit STRETCHANDFOLD.NL

The Loft, A’DAM Tower

It would be remiss to visit the city without paying a visit to the institution that is The Loft. Located on the 16th floor of the iconic A’DAM Tower, its 7m high floor-to-ceiling windows have become synonymous with a night you never want to end. In the same building, Shelter is another great club and holds its own as one of the city's great clubs.

Rijksmuseum

My day could easily be spent aimlessly wandering around the Rijksmuseum. It has this installation-style flow where paintings sit alongside objects from the same period, so you’re not just looking at art, you’re stepping into the whole moment, which makes it feel really immersive. Anytime I spot a mannequin or costume display, I’m there, and the Worn exhibition in particular is so well done. The best times to go are first thing in the morning or in the last couple of hours before closing, when it’s quieter and you can really take it all in.

Utrechtsestraat & The Nine Streets

My favourite areas in Amsterdam for people watching or a stroll. It stretches across the canal and is packed with boutiques, design stores and cafés. You could easily spend all day here.
