The Best-Dressed Stars At The Met Gala

The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night out and this year marked two major milestones: a spotlight on Black designers and the first Met Gala in over two decades to focus on menswear. The theme was inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' and, as expected, the industry turned out in full force to celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute's latest showcase. Attendees embraced the theme with their looks – from Zendaya in Louis Vuitton to Zoe Saldaña in Thom Browne, these were the standouts...

Zendaya

Wearing: Louis Vuitton

Why We Loved It: Zendaya's custom Louis Vuitton look was a reference to the white suit Diana Ross's Tracy character wears in the 1975 classic movie Mahogany, directed by Berry Gordy. Styled by Law Roach and embellished with a brooch and worn with a matching hat, she looked every inch the modern icon.

Miley Cyrus

Wearing: Alaïa

Why We Loved It: Miley’s all-black look consisted of a revealing, cropped leather jacket and a voluminous black maxi skirt with a drop-waist silhouette. The shape of the skirt, the gloss and high neck of the jacket, the Cartier gold collar and long braid all added to the drama.

Kerry Washington

Wearing: Custom SIMKHAI

Why We Loved It: Kerry Washington’s custom Simkhai look featured a tailored white jacket, with a deep v-neck and open back, over a sheer white skirt. The sleeves of the jacket had just the right amount of volume to complement the plunging neckline. Simple diamond crawlers and a hat finished everything off.

Zoe Saldaña

Wearing: Thom Browne

Why We Loved It: Unapologetically bold and a nod to the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style theme, Zoe’s Thom Browne look was composed of a sculptural black ribbed corset bodice which was buttoned all the way down the front, with contrasting white sleeves and a sharp dress collar. Finally, everything was wrapped up with a big feminine bow at the back.

Mindy Kaling

Wearing: Harbison Studio

Why We Loved It: The deep red velvet sash, white satin lapels and statement gold hardware added a strong regal feel to Mindy’s tailored tuxedo dress. From the sleek up-do to the train, white shirt and tie, it’s safe to say that Kaling nailed the brief.

Sofia Richie Grainge

Wearing: Tommy Hilfiger

Why We Loved It: Having collaborated with the designer earlier this year, Tommy Hilfiger was the obvious choice for Sofia. Proof that simplicity can stand out, she opted for a custom white dress with an oversized dandy-inspired bow at the back. Elegant but with a chic, playful edge.

Zuri Hall

Wearing: Custom Bishme Cromartie

Why We Loved It: A distinctly avant garde take on the theme, Zuris’s look featured a pinstripe blazer reimagined as a structured off-the-shoulder dress. The cutaway detail of the back and half up, half down hair and diamond collar added femininity and glamour.

Laura Harrier

Wearing: Zac Posen

Why We Loved It: Designed by Zac Posen for Gap Studio, Laura’s look featured a denim vest, a blouse with billowy sleeveless and satin palazzo pants – inspired by archival photos of the actress and model’s father and uncle, as well as the early literary figure of the dandy.

Sydney Sweeney

Wearing: Miu Miu

Why We Loved It: This sequinned black dress from Miu Miu featured beaded fringed cape sleeves, and a cut-out fastened at the neckline with a statement gold rosette. Sydney paired it with yellow-and-white-diamond drop earrings, a matching ring and a slicked-back ballerina bun with some kiss curls framing her face.

Coco Jones

Wearing: Manish Malhotra

Why We Loved It: Statement-worthy and steeped in opulence, Coco Jones brought some signature Met Gala drama in her pearl-adorned trousers and coat, rendered in regal silver-white. With ornate collar detailing, bold sapphire necklaces and a long black braid, she added a luxurious, feminine edge to the night.

Cynthia Erivo

Wearing: Givenchy by Sarah Burton custom Haute Couture look

Why We Loved It: Paying homage to famous black dandies, Cynthia Erivo shared images on social media of the historical figures from the post-Dandyism era that inspired her look. Featuring a rich, embellished corset paired with a statement tulle skirt, her entire outfit was custom designed by Sarah Burton to reflect the grandeur associated with superfine tailoring.

Alex Consani

Wearing: Custom Swarovski

Why We Loved It: Adorned in 39,200 Swarovski crystals, Alex Consani’s Met Gala debut was nothing short of dazzling. Referencing André Leon Talley and Patrick Kelly as her inspirations, she worked with stylist Carlos Nazario to put a glamorous spin on the theme.

Suki Waterhouse

Wearing: Michael Kors

Why We Loved It: Sporting a longline waistcoat dress, Suki Waterhouse embraced the softer side of tailoring. Backless, and with a plunging neckline and train, her look perfectly balanced the sharp lines of masculine tailoring with understated sensuality.

Lizzo

Wearing: Christian Siriano

Why We Loved It: Channelling monochromatic 80s glamour, Lizzo referenced the decadence of Old Hollywood with a fishtail gown, featuring draped satin panels and dramatic contrast. Complete with a cigarette wand and loose platinum blonde curls, she leaned into full-throttle cinematic drama with a high-fashion twist.

Mona Patel

Wearing: Thom Browne

Why We Loved it: After her success debuting at the Met last year, Mona Patel again proved her fashion credentials. Playing with textures for an impactful look, she paired a sequin-adorned corset with a satin suit – yet another testament to Thom Browne’s tailoring ingenuity. The contrast of high-shine embellishment against sleek structure created an effortlessly polished look reaffirming her status as one to watch on fashion’s most celebrated red carpet.

Imaan Hammam

Wearing: Magda Butrym

Why We Loved it: The look was androgynous yet feminine, classic yet ultra-modern. The Dutch-Egyptian-Moroccan model chose a white suit by Polish designer Magda Butrym. A black shirt and polka-dot tie added contrast to the structured white blazer and wide-leg trousers. She accessorised with a black cane, silver heels and a black floral headpiece adorned with long feathers.
