The Hot Prod: Boxer Shorts

Instagram trends can sometimes feel like a dime a dozen, and some are definitely better than others. Right now, we’re going all-in on female boxer shorts. Offering a fresh alternative to summer denim, fashion girls are styling them with heels for the evening and cool trainers in day – plus, plenty of slouchy tailoring to smarten up the look. If you’re tempted to give them a go, here’s what you need to know…

After the initial lockdown and the explosion of the loungewear trend, boxer shorts first made their way onto the scene last spring/summer – only this time around, the trend is more literal (think classic cotton men’s boxer shorts, complete with elasticated waistbands and button flies), with brands like Homme Girls, Yaitte and Comme Si all releasing versions in pale blue, white and pink poplin.

It's a testament to the loungewear trend beyond the pandemic to see fashion girls finding new ways to mix casual pieces with smarter ones – especially now that dressing up is back on the agenda. Joggers and a blazer has been the high/low look of choice, but with the weather getting warmer, boxers make a more appropriate – not to mention comfortable – seasonal alternative. Take your cues from the likes of Pernille Teisbaek, Debora Rosa and Anine Bing, all of whom have been spotted wearing the trend.

While not exactly the textbook definition of smart, boxers have proved themselves to be surprisingly easy to style up, both for day and night. Juxtapose their laidback aesthetic with something more elevated, like a boxy blazer or a pair of strappy heels and treat them as you would denim shorts – add a matching boyfriend shirt and sandals on holiday or throw on a sporty sweatshirt for a chic weekend look. Fortunately, the designer pairs are pretty affordable, but with so many high-street pairs on offer, you can try out the trend for less than £20 – bonus.
