The Resurgence

Born out of necessity, the boat shoe has evolved into a symbol of effortless style. Traditionally a summer staple, it’s recently acquired a more contemporary and seasonless flair. With chunkier treads and more structured silhouettes, the modern boat shoe resembles a fusion of loafer and moccasin.

The Designers

The original boat shoe was conceived and established by Sperry, but its recent resurgence has been led by Miu Miu. Paired with relaxed board shorts and untucked polo shirts as part of its SS24 runway show, the Miu Miu shoe had added scuffs and creases for that lived-in look. Other contemporary labels supporting the shoe’s comeback include Timberland, whose burgundy leather colourway has helped the style to transcend the seasons.

TAKE INSPIRATION from Lucy Williams and ELEVATE YOUR OFF-DUTY STYLE with some white denim and an oversized t-shirt. Throw on a leather jacket with a suede tote for AN EFFORTLESS FINISH.

The Reasoning

Following in the footsteps of chunky ‘dad’ trainers and Crocs, boat shoes are the latest ‘ugly’ footwear trend to take over. If you’re someone with a more masculine sense of style, they are a cool, smart-casual alternative to trainers and loafers.

The Styling

For an everyday look, pair boat shoes with barrel-leg jeans and soften the masculine silhouette with a crisp, oversized white shirt. Incorporate a chunky sock and throw on a longline trench coat. If boyfriend chic is more your vibe, then opt for dungarees or a double denim co-ord. Alternatively, to truly embrace the versatility of boat shoes, try them with tailored trousers and a structured blazer – or contrast their laid-back style with a midi dress for a playful twist on summer dressing.

HERE'S HOW TO STYLE THE TREND

Look 1

Incorporate these leather pieces into your everyday look with simple white denim and a suede jacket. Refine everything with a chic suede tote and gold accessories.

Look 2

Opt for something brighter with this statement red cardigan and washed denim. Bring the look together with some bold, sculptural jewellery.

Look 3

For a work-appropriate look, style a striped shirt with barrel-leg chinos for a cool, tailored base. Throw on some chunky gold earrings and add a woven tote for texture.
