Anyone who knows me knows I love heels. I don’t wear any other footwear unless I’m at the gym or the beach – yes, I’ve even been known to wear a block heel to festivals! I’ll even go as far as buying the same pair of heels twice if I love them that much. One of the questions I get asked most is “How do you walk in heels all day long?” The answer is simply by picking a comfortable pair. Of course, I own heels that look amazing but are excruciating to walk in, so I reserve them mostly for sitting down in. They might look incredible on, but you wouldn’t catch me wearing them to the office.
Try these tips for looking poised and polished every step of the way…
Break Them In
Taking a little time to break in your heels is a game changer. The quickest way to do this is by simply popping on a pair of thick socks, sliding your feet into your heels and giving them a quick blast with the hair dryer. The combination of heat and thick socks will stretch out the shoes, whilst also moulding them to your feet. Walk around the house, put the bins out or even do some lunges! If you don’t have time for this, you can also get heels stretched at your local cobbler.
Walk Heel-To-Toe
Never place your whole foot down at once. Instead, always put your heel down first, followed by your toe. This simple adjustment ensures your walk looks more natural. Keep your shoulders back, your core engaged, and your head up.
Take It Slow
There’s no need to walk at the same pace as if you were wearing trainers or flat shoes. Trying to walk too quickly in heels can lead to awkwardness or even injury. Slowing down might feel a bit unnatural at first, but it will ultimately look more elegant and less strained.
Consider Heel Height & Shoe Size
If you’re a heel newbie, opt for a heel height of three inches or lower. You can gradually build up the height over time. Kitten heels are trending, so take advantage of that. The higher the heel, the steeper the incline becomes, and your toes may start to feel squished if it’s a closed toe. This is the time when you should go up a size.
Be Prepared
Preparation is key, so when it comes to going out in heels, always have a mini rescue kit in your bag. From gel pads to Compeed plasters, make sure you’re ready to combat any issues on the go.
