What's Going On
If one fabric is defining summer dressing right now, it's broderie anglaise. As fashion pivots towards craft-led, artisanal dressing, the fabric's inherent texture and handiwork feel like a natural fit. Moving beyond minimalism and quiet luxury, this summer is all about dimension – and broderie is a natural for that: picture delicate eyelets and raised embroidery that catch the light and add depth to even the simplest silhouette.
The best pieces make broderie feel fresh rather than nostalgic. It can add volume and femininity to big, sweeping shapes – imagine tiered skirts and maxi dresses, where the texture amplifies movement. But it’s also appearing as a detail on otherwise minimalist pieces – a broderie hem on a straight-leg trouser, a trim on a sleeveless dress.
That versatility is key to the trend’s enduring appeal. Styled with denim and flat sandals, broderie reads effortlessly off-duty. Worn as a full look, it earns its place at a summer lunch or holiday dinner.
Where It's Come From
If there's one collection that cemented broderie anglaise as the fabric of the season, it's Jacquemus’s. Le Paysan drew on Simon Porte Jacquemus’s Provençal childhood to turn humble cottons and Sunday linens into voluminous skirts with scalloped, tiered hems. At Chloé, Chemena Kamali arrived at a similar place from a different direction, applying couture-level handiwork to the most ordinary of fabrics.
Elsewhere, Isabel Marant showed broderie in sand and ecru tones worn with denim and suede – her typically effortless take proving it doesn't have to be white or precious to work. Toteme, meanwhile, finished cotton poplin trousers with a broderie hem and built an entire maxi dress from the fabric –confirming that broderie has earned its place in even the most considered wardrobe.
How To Wear Broderie Anglaise Now
Broderie anglaise is one of those rare trends that works at every level. While Chloé and Jacquemus have shown what the fabric is capable of at its most elevated, contemporary labels like Faithfull the Brand and SEA New York are offering a cooler, more relaxed take, and the high street – H&M, Zara and Free People especially – has made the trend genuinely accessible this summer.
Taking a full feminine approach to trend – a matching broderie set or a babydoll dress worn head to toe – is the most directional way into it, and arguably the easiest. But a contrast approach can also be compelling: try a ruffled broderie top with straight-leg denim and dark loafers, so the softness of the fabric plays off the structure of the denim.
