Emma’s 10 Rules For Stylish Petite Dressing
Get your proportions right. It’s less about avoiding certain pieces and more about how you balance them. If I’m wearing an oversized knit or jacket, I’ll think about what I’m pairing it with to keep the overall look more considered.
Find your perfect jeans. Great denim is the foundation of so many outfits. I look for styles that sit well on the waist, skim the hips and have the right leg shape. Agolde is one of my go-to brands – finding the right length also makes all the difference.
Don’t be afraid of oversized cuts. Being petite doesn’t mean everything needs to be fitted. I love an oversized blazer, leather bomber or chunky knit – the trick is finding pieces that feel intentionally relaxed, rather than simply too big.
Pay attention to the length of jackets. Outerwear can make or break an outfit. Cropped jackets work brilliantly with high-waisted trousers and jeans, while longer coats can look incredibly chic. It’s all about where the hem falls and how it works with the rest of your silhouette.
Master the art of layering. A longer white t-shirt peeking out underneath a grey sweatshirt or knit is one of my favourite styling tricks. It adds interest and gives an outfit that slightly undone feel without doing too much.
Never underestimate a good shoe. The right shoe can completely change the proportions of an outfit. I love a pointed-toe style for a more streamlined finish but a chunky loafer, trainer or round-toe flat can look just as good. It’s about the overall look – not automatically reaching for a heel to try to add height.
Wear the trends you love. Petite dressing shouldn’t mean playing it safe. Whether it’s a voluminous faux-fur coat, a statement leather jacket or a dramatic bag, I’d rather find a way to make a trend work than rule it out because of my height.
Use a high waist to your advantage. High-waisted jeans and trousers are great for creating the illusion of a longer-looking leg, particularly with a tucked-in top or shorter jacket. It’s an easy styling trick that works with so many outfits.
Invest in alterations. A small adjustment can make a noticeable difference. Getting trousers shortened to the right length or having a blazer sleeve taken up can make an affordable high-street find look far more expensive – and it means you’ll wear it more. For me, fit is often more important than the label.
Remember that accessories can do the heavy lifting. A great belt, oversized sunglasses, chunky gold jewellery or a statement bag can make even the simplest jeans-and-knit combo feel more intentionally styled. I love building an outfit around good basics and using accessories to give it some personality.
