The Hot Product: Waistcoats

The Origins
Designed in England to be worn exclusively by men, the waistcoat dates all the way back to the 17th century – it’s said to have been a favourite look of King Charles II. Suffice to say, it’s come a long way since then, and is now one of many ‘borrowed from the boys’ trends embraced by women the world over.
The Fans
Fashion fans will remember Kate Moss’s iconic early 2000s take on the trend – there’s even an entire Pinterest board dedicated to her waistcoat looks. But then the waistcoast went into the wilderness until a few influential fashion creators and models started wearing them as part of their off-duty wardrobes – Kendall Jenner’s simple Frankie Shop look is one that particularly stands out.

The Brands
Saint Laurent and Dior were two designer brands to re-show the waistcoat during their 2020 and 2021 shows, prompting contemporary and high-street names to quickly follow suit. We recommend checking out the waistcoats on offer at The Frankie Shop, MARCÉLA LONDON, Anine Bing and Aussie brand Dissh. For something more budget friendly, Zara, COS and Mango are your go-tos.
The Look
Right now, neutral colours are the chicest choice. And opt for a wider silhouette on the bottom half to avoid looking dated – if you can, a matching tailored trouser is a sleeker choice. The beauty of a waistcoat look is it can be styled up or down – pointed heels or trainers both work. To make it even more casual, try teaming it with a boyfriend or straight-leg jean, while a floaty skirt will help you strike the perfect balance between masculine and feminine. The Future
While linen waistcoats have been this season’s preference, we predict we’ll see more oversized fits and velvet and knit fabrications as we move into autumn/winter – when they’ll lend themselves much better to being a cool layering piece over knits and shirts.
