How To Wear Yellow
If there was ever a colour to dress yourself happy, it would have to be yellow. Unlike the dopamine dressing of seasons past, butter yellow is arguably much easier to wear – but it still commands attention. Its versatility makes it easy to mix and match – whether you're going for a monochrome look or pairing it with neutrals, pastels or even bold hues. Seen on the SS25 runways at Jacquemus, Bottega Veneta, Loewe and Labrum, the shade is now making its way onto the high street just in time for spring. Here are my tips for getting it right this season…
Monochrome
A head-toe butter yellow outfit is an effortless way to embrace this elegant hue. Remember, though, a monochrome look doesn’t have to be one exact shade from top to bottom. Adding slightly lighter or deeper tones creates dimension. Don't forget about accessories, either, like a pair of sunglasses or an oversized tote bag. A co-ord would make for an easy go-to look.
Play with Texture
Mixing textures is the easiest way to give an outfit extra depth. Mixing materials like linen, silk, wool, and leather keeps an all-yellow look from feeling flat. For summer, a structured blazer over a flowy silk dress adds contrast. A butter yellow knit with a satin skirt gives an effortless yet polished vibe. Butter yellow and denim also make the perfect match.
Pair With Neutrals
Butter yellow looks stunning with white, beige, cream or grey for a minimal yet elevated style. Equally, earthy tones such as camel, olive and chocolate brown work well. A simple outfit formula is a yellow skirt, white t-shirt, an oversized grey blazer and white heels.
Colour Blocking
If, like me, you’re all about colour, then colour blocking with yellow is the way to go. Either pair it with other pastel colours such as powder blue, blush pink or sage green for the ultimate spring look or a primary colour like red for something bolder. The key is balancing saturation levels to keep the look chic rather than overwhelming.
Balance with Accessories
Let your butter yellow look do the talking by adding only minimalist or delicate accessories. Gold jewellery instantly balances out any look. For sunglasses, bold contrasting frames like black or tortoiseshell work well – as do matching yellow frames.
Finally, my advice to anyone scared of introducing colour into their wardrobe is to start with accessories. If a full-on yellow outfit feels intimidating, inject it via small touches, like a butter yellow bag, shoes or a scarf. Even a yellow jumper draped over the shoulders can add a subtle pop of colour.
