The Perfect-For-Parties Fashion Trend We Love This Year
THE BACKGROUND
Immortalised in novels like The Great Gatsby and characterised by plenty of glitz and glam, The Roaring Twenties was the ‘Golden Age’ of fashion – think fringing, heavy embellishment and sequins, all of which dominated the evening wear of the era. Later in the 20th century, artists and designers continued to embrace these details, with many referencing Saint Laurent’s 1967 heavily fringed collections and Cher’s iconic stage looks in the 1970s.
THE DESIGNERS
In 2020, fashion trend forecasters predicted that post-pandemic fashion would draw parallels to the 1920s – and rightly so, as maximalism and glamour appear to have been front of mind for designers over the past few seasons. Tony Ward’s 2022/23 Haute Couture show presented colour, volume and plenty of tulle, while Rami Al Ali’s pieces featured fan details, plenty of sequins and colour. Saint Laurent’s RTW collection included a feather mini dress – a modern ode to classic flapper style – and as ever, Ellie Saab delivered drama and glamour with cascading beaded fringes, embroidered tassels and crystal embellishments. Finally, Alexander Vaulthier opened his show with a shimmering black fringed floor length gown which set the scene for the rest of his show-stopping collection.

HOW TO STYLE IT
According to data from Tagwalk, fringing was one of four most-searched words (including boudoir, volume and metallics) when it came to autumn/winter fashion trends. Styling these trends is easier than you might think too – simply add to a pair of killer heels and a cropped faux fur jacket, along with embellished accessories and long pearl necklaces. For a subtle take on the trend, the high street has fun crystal and diamond-inspired statement earrings in spades right now.
