Where It Started

Once the reserve of brides, 'virginal' white has come a long way in fashion. From Mary Antoinette making white cotton both acceptable and desirable when she posed in a Dôen-style ruffled cotton robe for a portrait by Madame Vigée-Lebrun in the 18th century to women adopting white shirts as a staple throughout the 20th century, its versatile appeal has made it a fashion staple.

On The Runway

Although white never goes out of style, its overwhelming presence on the SS24 runways couldn’t be denied. Brands like Valentino edged towards a more masculine approach with oversized, structured suiting, while Victoria Beckham used satin to create more traditional evening pieces. Over at Chloé, we saw lots of clean lines accented by dramatic puff sleeves and feminine details.

How To Wear It Now

Summer is the prime time for white, so now is the perfect time to revisit it. Pair a structured white bandeau top with some tonal, wide-leg linen trousers for an effortlessly chic look. For something more statement, try a minimalist white suit accented with bold, colourful accessories. The key is to balance structured pieces with softer elements – stick to a looser silhouette and focus on bold accessories to build the look.
