Interiors Trend Watch: Dairy Tables

Why are people gravitating towards dairy tables now?

Dairy tables straddle the line between a kitchen table and an island: they feel and look like a table but are more of a prep space. They feel much less kitchen-y than an island, more like an heirloom piece of furniture. These days, more people are ‘furnishing’ their kitchens rather than fitting them, and a dairy table is the perfect piece for this look.

What is it about the heritage feel of a dairy table that resonates so strongly with modern life?

Solid, dark wood and turned legs – this standalone piece can transform any space with its grand yet simple look. People want warmth, texture and soul, and the dairy table has it all.

How does a dairy table differ functionally and visually from a conventional kitchen island?

A dairy table is more of a table than an island but it is the same height, so it’s practical for prepping or pulling up a bar stool. Think of it as a more stylish version of an island – plus, it’s a piece for life.

How are deVOL clients using dairy tables – for prep, dining or as a statement piece?

They are mainly using them as prep tables, centring them in the middle of the kitchen – just as you would an island. Lots are also choosing to add a gaselier pendant light above for the authentic country house vibe.

Are there any particular materials, finishes or proportions that work best?

We recommend a Carrara marble worktop with softly curved edges. Keep it long and slim, and don’t mess with the proportions – four turned legs or six if you prefer. We would consider a wooden end – two-thirds marble, one-third wood – for a very traditional look.

Can a dairy table still work in a smaller space?

The smaller the kitchen, the less good a dairy table looks; it's dependent on the room but we wouldn’t go any smaller than 1,500cm long. It’s a grand piece and doesn’t sit well in small spaces.

Do you see dairy tables as a passing trend or a forever staple?

They are such a beautifully traditional piece that they will stand the test of time – especially those that are handmade and hand-turned. A classic choice for an English country kitchen.
