Why do you like to use a frill?

The addition of a frill on upholstery creates a more feminine and softer effect in a room. It also provides a nice contrast to the sculptural shapes of other pieces.

It feels quite traditional – what's the origin of the look?

Frills can be traced back to the Elizabethan era when they were seen on the collars of those in the royal court. Over time, they made their way into homes, and anyone who was around in the 80s will certainly remember their dominance across interiors, especially at the hands of Laura Ashley.

How can you make sure it doesn’t look dated?

The key is  what you combine the frill with. To avoid the frumpy look, pair this detail with more tailored forms and contemporary pieces. The juxtaposition of styles will create a more dynamic effect.

Which fabric should you choose?

The main consideration is to use a fabric that drapes well. Stiff or bulky materials will create an unflattering look. Some of our most popular fabrics from the Nix range have been the organic tickings that drape really well and have a wonderfully fresh feel – Colonnade Cotton, our linens, and Regatta Cottons.

Is there a way to nod to the look?

For those who are cautious of frills but want to try them somewhere in their space, introducing them on cushions is a great way to add a subtle nod to the trend.

Which rooms do skirted pieces work best in?

For me, it works best in rooms where you want a softer touch, such as a bedroom or bathroom, or perhaps a child’s room. It also adds a fun element to a guest bedroom, where you might want some extra drama. Our Curtain Call, for example, has a gentle frill that works perfectly in a bedroom, drawing room or snug.

Finally, can it work in a contemporary space?

Yes, but it needs to be used judiciously to create that contrast within the space.
