Alice Edwards Shares Her Interiors Little Black Book

When former jewellery editor Alice Edwards couldn’t find the bespoke, personalised stationery she was looking for, Memo Press was born. Since then, Alice has steadily expanded her business, which now includes an elegant floral collection with silk bedding brand Gingerlily. Here, we sat down with her to find out more about her favourite interiors brands, destinations and more.

If I could only buy homeware from one place it would be Rose Uniacke. It’s the ultimate blend between comfort and minimalism. I love how she mixes antiques with mid-century furniture too. There’s something effortless but still intentional about her whole aesthetic.

Connolly is the most incredible interiors shop. The entire store feels like the most beautiful home you’ve ever set foot in. They make beautiful ready to wear but for me, it’s the way they put the space together that makes it so special. They also curate art exhibitions on the first floor.

For homeware, the best department in the world has to be Liberty. I used to go as a little girl with my dad and it’s still such a magical place. Even just to wander around, it’s like a cabinet of curiosities.

The coolest independent interiors brand is Sister by Studio Ashby. There’s something so joyful about everything it designs. The Puzzle Ottoman in the Duckweed Ismay fabric is high on my wish list right now.

The BEST VINTAGE PIECE I ever bought is a pair of G plan desks for the new Memo Press shop. The MAD MEN VIBE is the perfect balance to our rustic, heavier antique dressers.

If you’re looking for independent designers and makers, visit Abask. It was started by Tom Chapman (of MATCHESFASHION.com), and Bryony Sheridan – former homeware buyer for Liberty homeware – is the head buyer. It’s such a clever mix of household names, with international independent designers alongside carefully chosen antiques.

Lolas Leads is an under-the-radar brand everyone should know about. It makes beautiful extension cables º such a clever concept to make something so practical look better.

My perfect shopping day would preferably take place in a market in Provence. But the best vintage stores in the world are Stone Mill Antiques in Oxfordshire or The Old Cinema in Chiswick. I could get lost in both for hours. The best vintage piece I ever bought is a pair of G plan desks for the new Memo Press shop and studio. I love that they were made in the UK – the Mad Men vibe is the perfect balance to our rustic, heavier antique dressers.

The best sustainable brand is Edit 58 – years ago I ordered three baskets for our laundry room and I’ve been coming back ever since. I love its vintage rugs and particularly the woven trays.

For something really special I go to Fiona Finds. She manages to find the exact thing you need but never knew you did. It’s the place I go whenever I need a present for someone who is impossible to buy for.

I often give hardback or coffee table books as gifts  I believe you can never have too many. Last Christmas I found a first edition of a gardening book by Vita Sackville West at The Goose Bookshop on the Isle of Wight. It’s a treasure trove – you can’t possibly leave empty handed.

The best interiors gift I’ve ever received was a pair of Christian Liaigra chairs. My stepmother has impeccable taste and when she was renovating, these no longer worked. They have a leather frame with silk cushion pads in very cool grey.

The most recent item I bought for my home was some Zara Home photo frames. I try to swap our photos around every year or two. Susheel Schroeder just took some new portraits of my family and I can’t wait to frame them.

The most expensive investment I have made for my home was our kitchen. We waited almost seven years before renovating it. We worked with Peter from Elite Refurbishments and every day it brings me so much joy.

For tableware, I always check out Tavola by Skye McAlpine. Everything is whimsical but timeless. Our home is quite minimal and so it really changes up the space.

My favourite bedlinen is from Gingerlily. Once you’ve slept on their sheets, there’s no going back. The Gingerlily x Memo Press collection is a dream come true. I’m using the Lily of the Valley set on my bed and the Forget Me Not one on my daughter’s. There’s something nostalgic about the designs, it’s all very Sound of Music

I love glassware and my go-to brand is Curio by Vanderohe. It’s all hand blown in the UK and I love the incredible colours. The new heart-shaped vases are my favourite pieces right now.

For art, I always look at what The Catharine Miller Gallery and Modern Muse have. Both support brilliant contemporary artists  – from more established names to anyone up-and-coming.

It’s nearly impossible to beat Oka particularly for things like throw cushions. I had a window seat upholstered in Christopher Farr Cloth and was determined to find the exact shade of velvet oxblood for the cushions. Once again, Oka came up with the goods.

My FAVOURITE BEDLINEN is from Gingerlily. Once you’ve slept on their sheets, there’s no going back. Our collaboration is a DREAM COME TRUE.

I love hunting for furniture on eBay, Facebook Marketplace and in antiques shops. There’s something deeply satisfying about tracking down the exact right thing and giving it a new home.

You can find some really great lighting on the high street. I love Marks & Spencer. I’ve often bought their side lamps and put Matilda Goad shades on them.

The item I regret not buying is a solid block marble side table by Alex Eagle. They’re one of a kind and I dithered too long. I should have known it would sell out…

If my house was burning down, I’d save the art – photos luckily are all backed up, but each painting means something different and I treasure them, though I’m not sure it would be conducive to a speedy escape!

Next on my shopping list is a new bed. I have harboured dreams of a four-poster since I was little and have just about convinced my husband…
