A Childhood Home Reimagined

The Property
The property originally belonged to our client’s parents – he actually grew up in the house. It’s a beautiful Arts & Crafts home in the Surrey Hills, full of architectural charm and wonderful proportions. When the opportunity came to buy it, he and his wife were ready to leave London with their three young children, and because they knew the house so well, they already had a strong sense of what they hoped to evolve and enhance. They wanted to inject new life, colour and personality into the home and create something that truly reflected a young family of five: a house that could support busy days working from home, relaxed family time and generous entertaining. The property has six bedrooms (including two guest rooms). Although the clients were open to a complete renovation, very little needed to change structurally as the rooms were already well proportioned. What was needed was a full design upgrade, reimagining and refining the interiors throughout.
The Brief
Our clients wanted the house to feel vibrant, full of life and rich with colour. They were wonderfully trusting and encouraged us to push the colour palettes, which allowed us to bring in joyful, uplifting tones and patterns while always keeping longevity in mind. We design with decades in mind – how the home will feel in 10, 20, 30 years – and colour doesn’t stop a scheme from standing the test of time. We blended antiques, traditional shapes and contemporary pieces to create a home layered with warmth, character and timelessness.
LET'S TAKE THE TOUR
The Hallway
This space needed to set the tone for the whole house. We retained and celebrated the timber panelling and Arts & Crafts staircase. The muted green palette was drawn from the Soane fabric used on the curtains. A Sinclair Till runner ties the greens together with a subtle raspberry-red border. A deep burgundy slipper sofa adds depth, comfort and a moment of colour.

The Drawing Room
The greens and raspberry tones from the hallway continue here but in deeper, more saturated hues. Jewel-toned fabrics – think emerald velvet, aubergine linens and tapestry-inspired patterns to bring richness. Natural oak joinery adds timeless elegance and antique brass library lights create a warm, atmospheric glow.

The Octagonal Bar
Previously an underused area that acted as a drafty through-room, we immediately saw its potential as a glamorous entertaining space. The awkward shape meant a banquette was essential to anchor the round table. Jewel tones evolve here into rich burgundy and saffron, and the Julian Chichester marble-topped table is a statement centrepiece. Brass bamboo lighting delivers evening warmth and bespoke joinery includes brass accents, antiqued mirror and bamboo hardware.

The Kitchen/Dining
The kitchen layout remained as is but we elevated it with open shelving, marble worktops and beautiful wall lighting to keep it calm and airy. The three-metre ceilings meant high cupboards would feel wrong, so we kept the upper walls open and elegant and the green tones from the hallway continue here. We used a rich mahogany Jamb fabric on the window-front armchairs, paired with a Julian Chichester drinks trolley. Hutley & Humm designed the dining table – circular for daily family use, extending to an oval to seat up to ten.

The Snug
With little natural light, we encouraged the clients to embrace depth here to create a cocooning space. A deep-green envelops the walls and joinery, with playful raspberry detailing on the cabinetry. Joinery conceals a TV behind a sliding panel and it includes a desk for homework, while a log burner and tactile fabrics make it feel like a haven. Brass Anglepoise lights add warm, atmospheric evening lighting.

The Utility
This room works extremely hard for a family of five – laundry, coats, wellies, sports kit, cleaning supplies. We chose a soft toffee tone for walls and joinery, while deVOL glazed pendants offer stylish, functional overhead lighting.

The Study
We leaned into a warm, masculine colour palette here with rich toffee tones and dusty mid-tone blue. Cognac leather, blue-gloss joinery with brass detailing and a Flora Soames striped curtain add depth and texture. We incorporated the client’s existing glass-and-brass coffee table. A vintage wingback chair was reupholstered to sit harmoniously within the scheme.

The Main Bedroom
Designed as a serene retreat from busy family life, lots of soft off-whites, brass accents and gentle dusty blues keep the room feeling calm and refined. The antique dressing table and chest of drawers anchor the space and a bespoke header curtain adds a sense of quiet luxury. The white raffia Thibaut wallpaper incorporates some subtle texture and Pierre Frey’s Coral Ray fabric pulls the rust, bronze, brass, cream and blue hues together.

The Kids’ Bedrooms
Playful but not childish was the brief – and this was important for longevity. In the bedrooms we used contrasting red woodwork for energetic detail. All the rooms are future-proofed: sockets, wall lights and the layouts are all designed to evolve with them.

The Family Bathroom
Inspired by classic country house bathrooms but with a playful twist, we wanted the bathroom to feel timeless rather than overtly contemporary, with colour and pattern doing much of the decorative work. Green became the anchor for the scheme, used on the panelling to add warmth and depth. To complement this, we introduced slim-line green striped floor tiles from Otto Tiles, which add a gentle sense of movement and nod to traditional bathroom flooring. The overall result is a family bathroom that feels cheerful, layered and thoughtful – a space that balances everyday practicality with decorative charm.

The Guest Bedroom
On the first floor, this room has a generous desk that doubles as a dressing space – which is useful for guests or as an extra quiet space for the family. The geometric wallpaper sets the tone for the scheme: deep green, navy and ochre. A full-length upholstered headboard in deep yellow velvet grounds the room, while off-white herringbone curtains keep the palette balanced and serene.

The Attic Bedroom
This was a particularly fun space to design. The clients wanted a flexible family-friendly zone, so we designed an under-eaves sleeping platform with a huge mattress for the children to sleep head-to-toe. The wall lights make it ideal for TV-watching, playing or reading under a duvet and the walls and ceiling are fully wallpapered in a beautiful Anna French print, transforming it into a magical hideaway.
