Discover How Style Meets Practicality In This Family Apartment

The open-plan living space sets the tone for the entire apartment, balancing the elegance of a London riverside home with a relaxed, family-friendly feel. We started with a confident yet liveable palette, pairing inky black accents with soft pink walls to create warmth, depth and contrast. Characterful oak flooring, complete with decorative square joints, brings texture underfoot, while layers of linen, velvet and timber add richness throughout.

With uninterrupted views across the Thames, we wanted to subtly reference the apartment's waterside setting without leaning into obvious nautical motifs. A large antiqued mirror positioned opposite the windows reflects the changing light and river views back into the room, making the space feel even brighter and more expansive. Above, an oversized sculptural pendant gently echoes the form of a ship's rudder, offering a quiet nod to the location. Every piece of furniture was sourced specifically for the project, resulting in a scheme that feels collected, comfortable and timeless.

Although the kitchen is fully functional, it was designed to feel more like an elegant entertaining space than a hardworking family kitchen. As the apartment is used as a London base rather than a primary residence, we stripped the layout back to its essentials, opting for under-counter cabinetry and a single open display shelf in place of bulky wall units. The result is lighter, calmer and allows beautiful objects to become part of the design.

One of the earliest inspiration images featured an antique painted cabinet and sourcing the perfect piece became central to the scheme. We found a vintage cupboard with wonderful proportions before refinishing it in a beautifully layered distressed turquoise that adds both colour and character. Elsewhere, every utensil, chopping board and ceramic vessel was carefully chosen to be as decorative as it is practical, creating a kitchen that feels effortlessly lived in.

This bedroom was designed to feel instantly familiar. Early in the design process, the clients explained how much they loved the palette in the main bedroom of their Welsh home, so we recreated the same soft neutral walls and deep green accents to establish an immediate sense of comfort.

To make the room feel taller and more luxurious, a full-height curtain was installed behind the bed, creating a beautifully upholstered backdrop while softening the architecture. Mirrors positioned behind each bedside lamp bounce natural light around the room and reflect glimpses of the river the moment you walk through the door. We also reconfigured the adjoining dressing room, opening it into the bedroom to create a far more generous space and allow daylight to flood into the en suite beyond.

Although compact, the en-suite was carefully planned to feel calm, spacious and quietly luxurious. The rich green used in the bedroom continues into the vanity, creating a seamless visual connection between the two rooms and reinforcing the sense of retreat.

Every element was considered to maximise both function and atmosphere. The lighting was designed on separate circuits, allowing the mirror lights to provide a softer, more flattering glow for everyday routines while the overhead lighting can be reserved for when brighter illumination is needed. Bespoke joinery conceals the WC cistern within the vanity, making the room feel cleaner and more considered, while generous proportions were prioritised where they mattered most, resulting in a spacious shower and plenty of storage despite the compact footprint.

Designed for the couple's four children, the bunk room is full of thoughtful details that make it feel playful without sacrificing style. The starting point was creating a space that would feel exciting for younger guests while still sitting comfortably within the wider design of the apartment.

The striped wallpapered ceiling naturally draws the eye towards the Thames beyond, while each bunk has its own lampshade so every child instantly knows which bed is theirs. Glow-in-the-dark embroidered constellations on the bedding add an element of surprise after lights out and practical touches, including colourful lockers and rattan shelving, ensure the room is every bit as functional as it is fun.

The children's bathroom proves that practical spaces don't have to compromise on personality. A palette of turquoise and buttery yellow introduces playful colour in a way that still feels sophisticated, while hardwearing finishes ensure the room can cope with family life.

Given the apartment's riverside location, we subtly continued the nautical references through a pair of convex mirrors, which create the feeling of looking through portholes. Oak and terrazzo add warmth and texture, balancing the brighter tones while ensuring the room feels fresh, timeless and easy to maintain.
