8 Interior Designers, 8 Dream Schemes

In this series, we ask leading interior designers to put together moodboards of their dream schemes for different rooms in the house. This time, we asked them to tackle a main bedroom – be it for a city apartment or a country cottage. Here’s what they came up with…

“When I design bedrooms, my main aim is always to create a sanctuary; somewhere to retreat to after a busy day and feel surrounded by calm and luxury. Soft colours, beautiful textures and stylish accessories help to set the mood. In this space I chose a soft, warm coral pink for the walls and toned it down with the thick wool carpet for comfort. The colours and pattern on the stunning Liberty print curtains led the rest of the scheme, and I added more texture with burr wood bedsides, dressing table and edging on the bed.

“Finally, I always encourage people to buy the best bedlinen and accessories they can afford – we spend a lot of time in bed. If I have an early night, I will snuggle up with a book and have a scented candle burning on my bedside table – scent is so powerful and this one is particularly calming and cocooning.”

“This bedroom was designed for a young, international couple that predominantly live in London, but who also have a weekend home in the Cotswolds. For this serene country retreat, the brief was to create a restful bedroom where a young London couple could unwind on weekends.

“Our clients envisioned a sanctuary that would feel worlds away from city life, embracing the quiet, natural beauty of the surrounding area. In response, we designed a calming interior with soft, earthy tones. Subtle textures, elegant furnishings and layered lighting enhance the relaxed ambience, creating a tranquil escape that seamlessly reflects the home’s heritage while meeting our clients’ desire for a personal, restorative space.”

“I have designed an elegant and timeless bedroom within a busy family home. A bedroom should feel restful and tranquil, so I chose a soft neutral palette layered with natural textures and accents of dusky blue and rust.

“The focal point is the chic four-poster bed from RH. Wide bedside tables add valuable extra storage, the wallpaper is a wipeable vinyl for easy maintenance, and the curtains are paired with half-height flat sheers that provide privacy without blocking natural light. Soft lighting from the pendant, picture light and bedside lamps give the room a calming atmosphere, steering clear of harsh spotlights and creating a perfect escape from the everyday hustle.

“The brief for this bedroom was to create a calm space – our client travels a lot and she needed a bedroom she could retreat to and rest in. The bedsheets are 100% Russian linen and the bed valance is an organic cotton linen mix – I love the uneven stripes. To block out glaring sunlight and allow for dappled soothing light instead, we opted for blinds and a simple colour palette for the curtain material.

“Seagrass makes a wonderful base for layering a rug over. This rug is handwoven in South Africa and is incredibly luxurious, perfect when stepping out of bed barefoot. Oak bedside tables in a streamlined design are paired with this headboard and a pop of colour in the artwork. A lounge daybed in velvet completes the scheme.”

“This scheme is for a couple with a dichotomy of styles in a London townhouse. One favours the traditional, country house look, and the other a simple, neutral style. This scheme marries those aesthetics together to create a harmonious and comfortable bedroom.

“The wallpaper was my starting point, as it blends incredibly well with both styles. The focus was on textures and depth, rather than pattern, to strike that balance between classic and modern. The dark teal/blue fabrics work incredibly well with the olive green and yellows – the fan detail along the leading edge of the curtains introduced this smart colour combination and is also a lovely addition to the off-white fabric. Combining a mix of old and new furniture also created a more interesting scheme – in particular, the rug adds that modern touch, but also softens the space (I would layer it on top of a sisal fitted carpet). Finally, I love this Art Untamed print as it gives the room an elegance it deserves.”

“This moodboard was designed for a sophisticated client with a fast-paced, urban lifestyle who values clean lines, subtle luxury and a restful, retreat-like atmosphere. Our approach to this space within a modern city-centre apartment balances sleek, uncluttered design with touches that bring warmth, texture and playful character. For instance, the luxurious sheepskin upholstered clam chair and the lambswool-cashmere patterned throw introduce a soft, tactile warmth that encourages relaxation. At the room's focal point is a wavy headboard upholstered in a chic striped fabric, paired with circular legs for a fun, unique twist on the traditional bed frame.

“Functionality is essential to our design philosophy, and here it shines through in the lighting and storage choices. We have opted for wall-mounted pendants rather than traditional bedside table lamps, and bedside tables with built-in storage. This bedroom moodboard blends aesthetics with purpose, creating a tranquil yet lively environment where our client can unwind, recharge and feel entirely at home.”

“I envisioned this bedroom as a serene space for parents of young children – a room just for them. I wanted to create an enveloping, peaceful haven. It’s in a contemporary style, but still luxurious and warm, so not at all stark or harsh. This is to create that cocooning effect, along with incorporating natural tones with lots of texture and softness.

“The starting point for me is always the bed, a key foundational piece that acts as the focal point of the bedroom. My design tip is to go for the largest bed possible to get that luxury scale and proportion, and to invest in the key pieces where good craftsmanship will ensure longevity. From there, I contrasted the lightness with rich, dark-tone wood and marble bedside tables – the natural marble veining introduces a beautiful movement and an added touch of luxury. With the accessories, I went for elegant and timeless styling. I find that simple, clean styling contributes to a relaxing effect.”

“This scheme was put together for a contemporary yet classic bedroom in a Georgian Grade II-listed property in Bath. We based the aesthetic around a warm colour palette and added playful elements. With any period property, it’s important to accentuate the existing features, such as original mouldings and the amazing ceiling height – we opted for a limewash dusty pink ceiling to really draw the eye up and make the most of the space.

“As in most bedrooms, the bed is a natural focal point. We added vintage bedside tables and a beautiful rug underneath the bed to really ground the area. We introduced further personality with lots of textures, accessories and carefully chosen lighting.”
