Ellercombe English Quality Sparkling Wine, £22
Kick-start the celebrations with something special from local soil. This vivacious fizz has all the trappings of a traditional-method English sparkling wine, awash with acidity and bursting with crisp green apples and lime alongside those softer brioche notes to balance.

Sainsbury's Beaujolais Villages Coteaux Granitiques, Taste the Difference, £9.50
This is a really lovely red wine to pair on Christmas Day. It’s a lighter-style red wine with juicy black fruits and a hint of spice jumping out the glass. This is one that won’t overpower your turkey, it’s very easy to drink and enjoy and at 13% ABV, you won’t be falling asleep after one glass. Available here

Penfolds Max's Cabernet Sauvignon, £18
Some of us like something a bit more indulgent on Christmas Day and this cabernet sauvignon is ideal for those of us who do. This is bold and robust with a rich, dark palate. A good dose of oak, spice and intense black fruits combine to make a powerful and smooth wine.

Faustino Rivero Albariño, £12
For a lighter, brighter white wine, a Spanish albariño is just what you need. Faustino Rivero never fails to impress with its racy acidity and vibrant profile. It’s got plenty of citrus fruit, a touch of peach and a strong vein of minerality. It’s super interesting and is a great wine to stock up with at home. Available here

Blason Macon Villages, £10
If you like your white wines with a little more body, then this excellently priced chardonnay from Mâconnais is a great choice. Bright and floral with crisp stone fruit flavours (think apples and pears) this crowd-pleaser has a hint of creaminess to give it an edge and will match well with traditional Christmas Day dishes. Sainsbury's Royal Tokaji Late Harvest, Taste the Difference, £10
Why not finish things on a sweet note? Whether you’re partial to a Christmas pudding or cheese board, a dessert wine is the perfect bottle to accompany both. Hungary is famed for its royal tokaji sweet wine – it has flavours of honeyed apricots and peach which work well at this time of year. Be sure to pair it with a robust blue cheese. Available here
