Heather’s Food & Drink Hot List
THE LONDON ARRIVAL:
Dumbo
Of course, London doesn’t need another burger joint. However, Parisian hotspot Dumbo has landed in Shoreditch and is well worth the trip. This is the team’s first foray outside France, where Dumbo is famed for its picture-perfect (almost cartoonish, in fact) smashburgers, proper French fries and chicken nuggets, complete with sweet-and-sour dip. Over here, the perfectly crisped patties are made using high-quality, responsibly sourced meat from HG Walter, the renowned London butcher that supplies the River Café and Brat. The shop’s muted white palette and clean tones provide a neutral backdrop for the crisp lines of brushed stainless steel that define the open kitchen, from where the cook line flip patties as they greet you. Trust me, you need to add this to your summer eating list.

THE POP OF COLOUR:
Sabre
I’ve recently given my cutlery drawer a new lease of life, thanks to some hot-pink butter knives from Parisian brand Sabre. Spotted at restaurants around the UK – I recently used its steak knife to halve one of Dove’s wondrous gorgonzola burgers – Sabre's designer steel blades are both eye-catching and satisfying to use. You don’t have to go down the neon route: some of its bestsellers are of a more natural hue, and the range is so plentiful, there’s bound to be a shade that matches your scheme.

THE COLLAB:
Bold Bean Co X Ottolenghi
Ever-more-popular Bold Bean Co has teamed up with Ottolenghi to launch its jarred Queen Black Chickpeas. With a beautifully rich and nutty flavour profile and creamy texture, these chickpeas were chosen because they hold their shape, making them ideal for roasting until crisp, slow-cooking into something savoury and satisfying, or sautéing in olive oil until buttery soft. With a firm bite, their thicker skins create a contrasting mouthfeel that adds bite to dishes where texture matters. You’ll find them in an eye-catching red jar on the Ottolenghi website, alongside a handful of recipes to make with them.

THE BBQ ENHANCER:
Gymkhana Fine Foods
Whether you’re partial to a butter masala or a rogan josh, Michelin-starred Gymkhana’s famous cooking sauces, marinades and chutneys are all on hand to buy from its online shop, Whole Foods and Ocado. Each of these Indian pantry staples – which includes moreish peanut and sesame chutney, butter masala and vindaloo – has allowed fans like me to recreate Gymkhana’s legendary dishes at home in a few simple steps. While these have been in my regular kitchen rotation for a while (especially the Goan curry sauce, which – paired with peppers and salmon – is the easiest dinner), some new BBQ boxes have grabbed my attention. The Chef’s Collection includes everything – and I mean that – for a killer BBQ: a tandoori spatchcock chicken, four chicken tikka thighs, two tandoori lamb chops, four lasooni wild tiger prawns, one sharing hariyali paneer tikka, two garlic naans and a side of its moreish green chutney. It certainly beats burnt bangers.

THE COCKTAIL:
Fink’s Cherry Margarita
North London café Fink's has designed its Cherry Margarita as the ultimate summer serve. Blending tequila, cherry brandy, cherry bitters, maraschino and lime rantcho, this new fresh take on the classic margarita is bright, bold and bursting with in-season cherries. Bottled and ready to go, there’s no shaking, squeezing or stress required – just pour over ice and enjoy.

THE TABLE:
One Club Row
If there’s one restaurant that’s had everybody talking this season, it’s One Club Row from chef Patrick Powell, James Dye and Benjy Leibowitz. Sitting above the trio’s recently opened pub, The Knave of Clubs, the hotspot is a tribute to the best of New York hospitality. Drawing on the decade Benjy spent working in NYC, it’s a restaurant for long lunches, late dinners and – according to the team – “dining at the bar, people watching and one too many martinis”. I can attest to that. Sitting up at the bar, next to Off Menu’s Ed Gamble, I fell upon doily-laden plates of pickled jalapeno gougères, and lobster and country ham croquettes, freshened things up with tuna crudo and smoked aubergine, before splitting its excellent cheeseburger, which comes with a silver jug of peppercorn sauce for dipping, and a genuinely life-changing rice pudding crème brûlée – it finally put to bed my childhood memories of cold, gloopy school puds. And boy, the martinis were good (you know they will be when a bar divides its menus into ‘Martinis’ and ‘Not Martinis’). After kicking things off with a two-sip olive-oil martini on the house as we perused the menu, I spent the rest of the evening on its signature martinis, which are finished with a bright pink cherry. It was as fun a meal out as I can remember (and I do remember it, honestly).

THE SPECIAL EDITION:
Mochalossus
Over the last 25 years, Fortnum & Mason has been growing its Lossus collection of tinned biscuits – a selection of treats where the chocolate-to-biscuit ratio is almost obscene. Customer favourites include Gingerlossus (ginger) and Toffolossus (toffee), but newcomer Mochalossus is a serious contender. Fortnum’s own Piccadilly-blend coffee is steeped overnight to create a slowly brewed coffee extract that gets added to the clotted cream biscuit base, then combined with chocolate chips and coated in an extremely thick layer of milk chocolate. The result is the perfect treat to pair with your late-morning cup of coffee.

THE SUMMER TREAT:
Brickell’s Ice Cream
Somerset’s Brickell’s Ice Cream is now available for nationwide delivery. Run by Rob and Iona Gore in Westcombe, Brickell’s makes all-natural craft ice-cream. Free from preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilisers, colourings and flavourings, it’s an entirely un-ultra-processed ice cream, which is almost unheard of in commercial ice-cream production. This season has seen the pair launch some excellent new flavours thanks to collaborations with the likes of Blackbee Honey, Land Chocolate and their neighbours Landrace Bakery. While you must try the signature roasted strawberry, its new mint choc chip, cardamom, raspberry and toasted white chocolate, and honeycomb combinations are insanely good – and worth stocking your freezer with.

THE HOMEWARE:
Monoware
Monoware has released its Barista collection, which has been thoughtfully designed for every type of hot drink. With smooth curves and minimalist, timeless looks, each piece is available in the brand's signature Chalk, Pebble and Slate glazes, building on the success of the brand’s bestselling Everyday Mug. The Cafe Cup is a traditional shape with a handle that fits perfectly in my hand, while the Savour Cup is handleless. Matching saucers complete the collection. The full range consists of an espresso cup, a flat white cup, a cappuccino cup and a filter cup – ideal for anyone moving house or looking to upgrade their mug collection in one swoop.

THE DRINK:
Botivo Can
Another collaboration Ottolenghi has been involved with this summer is creating his own spice-laden bottle of Botivo, the ‘spirit’ that’s changed the non-alcoholic drinks market. But perhaps even more exciting for fans of the drink is the summer release of its new canned sparkling botanical aperitivo. Its signature serve, now ready to go in a can, is a non-alcoholic spritz with bright citrus and bittersweet botanicals. Each can contains a mix of British apple cider vinegar slowly infused with fresh rosemary, thyme, gentian, wormwood leaf and orange zest. It’s a gamechanger for anyone not drinking this summer.

THE DELIVERY:
Secret Smokehouse
From humble beginnings smoking fish in his Stepney back garden, Max Bergius has grown Secret Smokehouse into the UK’s first B Corp-certified smokehouse. Ten years in, he supplies some of the nation’s finest kitchens, like the Ritz, the Devonshire and Core by Clare Smyth. Everything is traditionally oak-smoked and hand-prepared on site under an arch in London Fields, and everything is available to order through the post – look for oak-smoked trout, mussels, kippers and salmon, plus its bestselling fish pâtés. I can’t get enough of the Zesty Hot Smoked Salmon Pâté, which I’ve taken to slathering over hot buttered toast for a simple lunch. I was going to toss the smoked mussels into a vongole (secretly pleased I wouldn’t have to deal with cleaning out the shells), but Max told me to eat them as they come, with a cocktail stick in hand. I’m glad he did: they were incredible – and just the match for a cold glass of sherry.

THE COOKIE:
Puffy
Dumbo isn’t the only Parisian brand jumping over to London this summer. The French team behind Soho’s phenomenally successful burger spot Junk has now opened Puffy. On Old Compton Street, Puffy serves up seven cookie flavours, each made with the highest quality ingredients. The opening line-up includes signature favourites such as milk chocolate, chocolate duo and peanut butter, white chocolate and matcha and white chocolate and macadamia. The team will also be serving freshly ground coffees from one of London’s finest, Origin Coffee.

THE COCKTAIL:
Town Martini
After two years sworn off martinis, following a martini-fuelled tour of London’s bars with our columnist Alexandra Dudley, I’m thrilled that my love for the cocktail has returned just as the capital’s martini scene undergoes a renaissance. Alongside the aforementioned One Club Row menu, Jeremy King’s martini happy hours at The Park, and Bar Valette’s tiny sherry-infused version in Shoreditch, Town has helped reignite my love with its Dill Boy cocktail. A vodka concoction created by Satan’s Whiskers’ Kevin Armstrong, it’s made with vodka, dill akvavit, dry vermouth and a drop of dill oil, which catches the eye as it hovers on the surface. It’s the perfect way to kick off a meal at Town, which chef Stevie Parle opened in Theatreland last month. Make sure to order the saffron and bone marrow risotto and – unexpected crowd favourite – a loaf of potato sourdough with beef gravy.

THE OPENING:
Lupa
I can never get enough of Rome. While I plot my next trip to see the city’s blockbuster Caravaggio exhibition before it closes next month, I’m all in on Lupa, a new Roman-inspired neighbourhood restaurant from Carousel’s Ed Templeton and actor Theo James (The White Lotus and The Gentlemen). Up in Highbury, Lupa’s head chef Naz Hassan is serving crowd-pleasing classics, alongside seasonal dishes that nod to the specialities of the Eternal City. Menu highlights include fiori di zucca, carbonara, bucatini all’amatriciana, slow-roasted porchetta and the all-important tiramisù. The vibe is laidback: low lighting, packed-in tables, comfortable seats, upbeat music that stays secondary to the chatter of the evening’s guests, and unhurried service. I can’t wait.
