FRUIT & VEG
Tenderstem broccoli: This is one of my non-negotiables – I usually buy two or three packs because I eat so much of it. Tenderstem feels a bit more upmarket than regular broccoli, and I prefer the texture. I like my vegetables to have a real bite to them. Pasta is our default meal at home, so I often make a big bowl of it with broccoli on the side, boiled for a couple of minutes then pan fried with garlic, lemon and chilli.
Conference pears: I’m really into these at the moment, but I have a love-hate relationship with them because you have to catch them at the perfect time. No one wants a mushy pear or one that’s too hard. They also have to come straight out of the fridge, nice and cold. When they’re juicy and crisp, they’re perfect.
Red cabbage: I go through phases of obsessing over certain foods, eating them every day until I can’t look at them anymore. Right now, I’m really into red cabbage. I shred it finely with my peeler and use it as a side slaw for rice bowls, noodles or salads. I mix it with rice wine vinegar, salt and a touch of sugar for a crunchy, pickled slaw. Red cabbage is full of antioxidants and vitamin C, which is great for boosting the immune system and improving skin quality.
Peppers: I’ve also started incorporating red, orange and yellow peppers into my diet, which really helped when I struggled with acne. They’re really high in vitamin C – more than an orange – which has great benefits for the skin.
Shallots: I’m a big shallot fan. I love how they offer the perfect balance between red and white onions – soft and sweet, but with a bit of tang.
FRIDGE
Butter: I love salted butter, and my favourites are by President and Castle Dairies – a Welsh supplier known for its creamy and delicious dairy products. I usually look for ones with a Great Taste award. I also like Flora Plant as my partner is plant based and dairy free. It’s a great alternative, and you can’t really tell the difference from regular butter.
Kimchi: Kimchi and sauerkraut are always in my fridge. I like their gut health benefits, especially as I eat a lot of legumes, which can cause bloating. I often have some before or after a meal to help with that. I’m a savoury snacker during the day, and one of my favourites is kimchi and avocado on toast.
Jam: I make my own jams and keep them in the fridge. My favourite flavours include apricot, and rhubarb with ginger and cardamom. Making jam is a wholesome activity I really enjoy, and it’s delicious on a thick slab of buttered toast or a croissant.
Clarence Court eggs: I have eggs every day for breakfast. Right now, I’m mostly having soft boiled dippy eggs with soldiers (very nostalgic as my mum used to make it for me when I was younger). Straight out the fridge, brought to room temperature for ten minutes, then six minutes in boiling water for the perfect runny yolk.
Parmesan: I always have fresh parmesan to hand. I get the best quality I can, especially when I travel. I also use parmesan as a seasoning, in salad dressings, on top of salads and in soups. Its salty, umami flavour is perfect. Nothing goes to waste as I also use the rind in sauces.
CUPBOARD ESSENTIALS
Beans: Beans are a huge staple for me, especially the ones by Bold Bean Co, which are my favourite, followed closely by Belazu beans. This month, I’m enjoying butter beans which are soft and delicious. They’re a great way to add protein and fibre to your diet. I love experimenting with them, whether in bean risottos, stews or blending them into creamy sauces or soups.
Honey: I’m obsessed with honey and collect it from every place I visit. I currently have 17 jars in my cupboard. I particularly love set honey. I’m half Russian, and when I was young, I wasn’t a fan of Russian food, so I’d live off dark rye bread, thickly spread with butter and honey when visiting family – it’s one of the best combinations, especially with a sprinkle of sea salt. French honey, especially floral ones like acacia, is also amazing. I’ve tried some fantastic honey while road-tripping through Italy and Switzerland, and recently in Wales and the Cotswolds.
Mama Yu's Original Chilli Oil: I’m totally obsessed with crispy chilli oil – I put it on everything. If I’m not having pasta, I’m probably enjoying a rice bowl with fish, vegetables or tofu. Last year, I discovered the Momofuku chilli oil in America. The black truffle version is also insane (though annoyingly not available in the UK yet). My current favourite, though, is Mama Yu's chilli oil, which I only recently tried. I’m furious with myself that I've been missing out for so long – the smokiness and sesame flavour are incredible. I’m about to place a big Delli order to stock up!
Milk Whipped Halva & Pumpkin Seed Tahini: Speaking of Delli finds, I recently came across the brand Milk. The pumpkin and tahini spread is delicious. It has a similar consistency to peanut butter, but with pumpkin seed butter at the bottom and a thick layer of tahini on top. It’s addictive.
Gymkhana sauces: I’m usually quite snobby about pre-made sauces, as people can make better at home, but Gymkhana’s Goan curry sauce is life changing. We always keep some on hand for lazy dinners. I toss it with chickpeas and roasted veg to create a Michelin star-worthy curry in under half an hour.
Cereal: We always have a good selection of oats and cereal in the house. I love having a bowl of cereal before bed, but never in the morning. Crunchy Nut Clusters are my go-to – they’re such a great night-time snack.
SNACKS & TREATS
Crisps: I’m a big savoury snacker until about 8pm, then I switch to sweet. I love crisps – if I were on death row, they’d probably be my starter. Pickled onion Monster Munch, Hula Hoops Original, salt and vinegar Discos, and McCoy’s are my favourites. I also love high-end crisps like Blanco Nino tortillas. The Creamy Jalapeño and Chilli & Lime flavours are next level, and perfect when we’re entertaining.
Roasted salted cashews: These are so moreish and always go down well when we have people over.
Chocolate: I’m a big fan of dark chocolate, especially for baking, but when I want a sweet treat, I go for milk. Tony’s Chocolonely is delicious – the Everything Bar is so addictive, I could eat it in one sitting. Recently, I’ve also rediscovered my love for Toblerone. My mum still buys me an advent calendar every year, and last year she got me a Toblerone one. I’ve been obsessed all over again.
Sweets: I love sweets, so pick ’n’ mix at the cinema is my heaven. I need about 15-20 minutes before the film starts to make sure I get all the right ones. Another obsession of mine is Candy Kittens’ Wanderlust sweets – they’re pink and creamy, almost rainbow-coloured. The texture is amazing.
Medjool dates: My go-to snack is a viral TikTok creation – a thin layer of Medjool dates, a layer of nut butter, a layer of dark chocolate, and a sprinkle of sea salt, cut into bars. It's the perfect sweet fix and it's a healthier option. Recently, I've been trying them with sunflower seed butter, which adds a savoury umami vibe that complements the sweetness.
FREEZER
Garden peas: I toss these into pasta, curries and sometimes salads.
Itsu gyozas: I always have a bag of frozen dumplings, usually the Itsu ones. They’re perfect for when I don’t feel like cooking much. I just boil a few, finish them off in a pan, and pair them with some veggies and noodles for a quick, easy meal.
Bone broth: I have a lot of bone broth in my freezer. Whenever I cook a chicken, I keep the carcass to boil down into broth and freeze in mug-sized portions. It’s great for collagen levels and, while it’s not that high in nutrients, it’s a nice salty drink in the afternoon. You can also use it in soups and stews.
DRINKS
Elderflower cordial: My go-to soft drink is elderflower cordial with soda water. There's so much naturally growing elderflower near where I live, so I’ll go out, forage and make my own. It feels very wholesome. I usually make a big batch and store it in the freezer so I can enjoy it year-round.
Pentire Coastal Spritz: I'm a big fan of Pentire. My favourite is the non-alcoholic Coastal Spritz, which mimics a Campari, Aperol or negroni vibe but with soda water. Pentire’s range is healthy and clean, which is great because a lot of cocktails are just crammed with sugar syrups.
Campari: When it comes to alcohol, I’m a big Campari and soda fan. It’s my go-to on a night out. I also love a negroni or very, very dirty martini.
Peroni Nastro Azzurro Beer: I love a cold beer like a Peroni with a pizza or a burger. It always has to be from the bottle, though. Nice and crisp.
Barolo wine: I like white wine at the right time and place, but I could drink red wine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Barolo is probably my favourite region for red. It can be full bodied but not too heavy. In the summer, I also love rosé – Whispering Angel, Minuty, all of those are lovely, especially with ice.
MOTH cocktails: For pre-made cocktails, Moth is my go-to. They’re so good – and lethal! I went to Glastonbury last year, took a whole pack of Moths, and they were perfect.
