The Beauty Insider: Lisa Potter Dixon’s Beauty Rules

Every fortnight, make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon shares her tips and tricks on what’s new, what’s cult and what you really need to know in the world of beauty. Right now, she’s talking about celebrating summer using pops of colour.

Whether you need glasses or not, they are a great accessory – I switch between contact lenses and multiple pairs of specs. However, making sure your make-up works with your glasses can be tricky, so here are all my favourite tips for a ‘spec-tacular’ look. (Sorry! Couldn’t resist.)

Lashes

Curling your lashes makes such a difference when you wear specs. Not only does it open the appearance of your eyes, it helps prevent your eyelashes touching the glass and smearing them with mascara.

My faves:

Tweezerman Neon Pink Great Grip Eyelash Curler

I didn’t pick this one just because it’s pink. The grip on the handle gives you extra control and the curlers themselves are very good.

Surratt Relevée Lash Curler

Clever design means this one puts less pressure on your lashes, protecting them while still giving excellent lift and curl.

Concealing

Glasses can shadow the area under your eye. Counteract this with a concealer that’s one shade brighter than your skin tone. Draw a triangle from the inner corner of the eye, down to the top of the cheekbone, and up to the outer corner of the eye. Blend upwards, towards the lash line with either your fingers, a damp sponge or a fluffy eyeshadow brush. The entire area of the eye is 40% thinner than the rest of the face. Brightening the lid as well as the under-eye area makes such a difference. Take your concealer there too – it also acts as a great base for your eyeshadow.

My faves:

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye

This little tube of magic works wonders, covering and brightening the darkest of circles.

Maybelline Eraser Eye

It’s got a cult following for a reason. The sponge on the tip helps you blend the product flawlessly, while the formula is creamy, brightening and smoothing.

Less Is More

If you’re going to be wearing your specs all day, don’t bother applying foundation around the areas where your glasses sit on your face, especially the nose pads. The glasses will just rub the make-up off and get grubby themselves.

Eyeliner

Liner is great for glasses wearers because it defines your eyes. If you have a thick frame, go for a thicker line. Thin frame? You’ve guessed it, go for a thinner line. This will help balance your overall look. As well as creating a classic line, using a nudey pink liner in the waterline can make a huge difference. A simple but effective trick, it takes down any redness and brightens.

My faves:

Zoeva Soft Kohl Eyeliner in Karnat

The perfect balance of pink and nude, this pencil is waterproof, so it won’t budge through the day.

MAC Chromagraphic Pencil

Pigment rich and long wearing, this pencil is gorgeous in the waterline or as a brightening top-lash liner.

Brows

Your brows make such a difference when you wear glasses – particularly if you can see them over your frame. Making sure they are groomed will lift the whole look of the face. Overgrown brows and dark-framed specs are not the one!

My faves:

Benefit Gimme Brow+

This fibre gel sets your brows in place and add a natural-looking tint.

Elf Clear Brow & Lash Mascara

This gel is brilliant. It keeps your brows in the style you choose and conditions the hair at the same time.

Lips

Pairing a bold lip with glasses is always a great decision. Don’t be afraid to clash your lippy with your specs. Be brave.

My faves:

Givenchy Le Rouge Night Noir in Plum

These lipsticks are stunning. They are sheer and sparkly – the perfect balance.

Nudestix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Stiletto

Long wearing and immediately impactful, these lipsticks have an incredible creamy formulation.

Mirrors

Without my glasses, I can hardly tell whether it’s the cat or a coat on my bed, so I know applying make-up can be pretty tough. Try using a magnifying mirror, preferably one with lights. I have a large one for my dressing table and a small one for my make-up bag, because balancing your glasses on your nose, while looking into a normal mirror, while on the tube, is not fun.

My faves:

Riki Loves Riki Mirror

It’s an investment, but this is one of the best mirrors I’ve ever owned. It has three types of magnification and adjustable LED lights. Once you’ve done your thing, you can even clip your phone to it for a selfie. One for the Christmas list.

Rio Illuminated Magnifying Mirror

Battery powered and double sided, this mirror is round and has a swivel stand so that you can angle it anyway you want.

Whether you need them or not, keep rocking your specs!

Love & lipstick,
