Why G-Beauty Is The New K-Beauty

Known for their simple and no-nonsense style, German beauty brands are taking over the beauty industry with effective products that avoid flowery talk and sceptical claims.

While German brands are not that new in beauty, they are fast becoming global bestsellers thanks to their scientific innovation, simplicity and organic and sustainable credentials. And with clean living, an increasing priority for so many, here are the G-beauty brands to put on your radar…

The G-Brand: Weleda

This natural Swiss-German beauty emporium has been selling their Skin Food Moisturiser since 1921 and while the packaging lacks bathroom cabinet appeal, the formula speaks for itself. With a cult following that reads like a list of Oscar winners, Weleda has become the go-to brand for free-from products for women and children alike and has well and truly stood the test of time.

The G-Brand: Barbor

The beauty revolution began in 1955 when Dr. Michael Babor developed HY-Öl® cleansing oil, which would become one of the mainstays of the company. Today it remains one of BABOR’s best-sellers of all-time. Every product – from the original idea through to the finished jar – is created in Germany. Thanks to a facelift of its’ packaging in 2000, Barbor’s skin and body range has become the go-to for innovative formulas that deliver and to this day the business is still run by members of the Barbor family.

The G-Brand: Dr Barbara Sturm

She is best known as the specialist in aesthetic medicine who creates unique and custom-made skin creams using people's actual blood. But if this isn’t your style(!), Dr Barbara Sturm Face Cream Light is our new favourite. Her aim is to freshen up and rejuvenate the appearance of your skin by encouraging a glow from within. With men and kids’ products too, it’s no wonder her fan base can be found all over the world.

The G-Brand: Royal Fern

Although dermatologist Dr Tim Golueke specialises in laser treatments, his product line, Royal Fern, is a powerful skin collection that quite simply does the job. As the label suggests, the line is infused with fern extract, which is known for repairing and preventing inflammation and hyperpigmentation.

The G-Brand: Lavera

Very similar to Weleda, but a little easier on the wallet, Lavera houses the basics in your skin and body regime, from deodorant and body lotion to shampoo and toothpaste, with the least amount of fuss, ever. We particularly rate their specialist line of products designed to be extra gentle on sensitive skins.

The G Brand: Zoeva

Killing it in the makeup brush department is cult favourite, Zoeva. Their high-performance make-up brushes have a vast following and are seen as some of the best in the business – applying makeup and contouring your face seamlessly, they even have a separate vegan-free makeup brush collection too.

The G Brand: Dr Hauschka

This natural and original brand needs no introduction, Dr Hauschka is known mainly for their frill-free skincare and luxury bath products packed full of natural plants and herbs. More recently their growing makeup range is creating a stir with beauty editors and makeup artists alike. Our favourite? The Eye Crayon Duo sticks.

The G Brand: The Sign Tribe Remove & Chill Nail Polish Eraser Cream

Trust the Germans to nail this… If ever you needed an example of an innovative formula, then this is it. Remove & Chill is a nail cream, the first of its kind: an innovative, waterless, acetone-free removal cream that dissolves nail polish, provides nourishing nail care and actually smells good. This is the next level of nail polish removal. Now, we’re just waiting patiently for a gel removal formula that does the same job.

The G Brand: Augustinus Bader

And finally, the prize to the best newcomer has to go to Augustinus Bader. You might have to remortgage your house to afford it but you'll be glad you did. Just two years old but AB already has a major celebrity following with Kate Bosworth claiming, “my skin craves this!”. With only two face creams available in the range, a regular and a rich formula, we have no doubt this is just the beginning of what’s in store. While no face cream will get rid of lines, boy this will make your skin look better than ever. Just ask Victoria Beckham…
