Skin Saviours

Ceramidin™ Skin Barrier Moisturizing Cream, £38 | Dr. Jart+
Gentle Skin Cleanser, £11.50 | Cetaphil

After a recent bout of lingering perioral dermatitis I have vowed to no longer be without a tube of the Dr Jart+ Ceramidin Skin Barrier Moisturising Cream. Unfortunately, a compromised skin barrier is part and parcel of dermatitis, so mine needed all the help it could get to restore its health. This excellent range is formulated with 2.3% ceramides and glycerin, both of which are important for skin barrier repair and preventing moisture loss. I can’t tell you how much it helped. When I get a flare up, simplicity is the name of the game, so this time around I also called on my trusty Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, a bottle of which is always in my bathroom cabinet. As well as being fragrance-free, soap-free and full of hydrating ingredients, it cleans effectively without compromising the skin barrier. If you’re in a tricky spot with your skin, I can’t recommend it enough as a starting place. Same goes for teens with breakouts and confused menopausal skin. My final skin SOS? Dr Anjali Mahto on speed dial, please. Her smart, solid advice is always my first port of call.

Make-Up Master Kit

Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush, £26 | Rare Beauty
Lip Definer: Waterproof Lip Liner, £30 | Victoria Beckham Beauty
Modern Lip Definer, £19 | Vieve
Line & Shine Lipliner & Gloss Duo, £17 | Sculpted By Aimee

A great blusher is an essential part of my emergency beauty kit. It may sound frivolous but its multi-tasking ability means you can use it on cheeks, eyes and lips if you’re in a pinch; I often call on it when I find my make-up has mysteriously disappeared after a long car journey. Rare Beauty’s new Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush is everything you could want; pigmented, melting and moussey. I have about six or seven lip liners in my bag at any one time and about triple that in my kit at home. Although it’s not always about emergency applications, I do love the versatility of a lip liner. Depending on the shade (although they’re almost all neutrals) I also use them for faux freckles (an easy way to create quick sun-kissed skin) and as eyeliners to add a soft contour. Most importantly though, a quick flick over the lips is an instant route to looking polished. You know by now about my love of Victoria Beckham Beauty Lip Definers, but Vieve’s Modern Lip Definer in ‘Aphrodyte’ is also sensational. Sculpted by Aimee’s clever Lip & Shine duo is a new discovery and is now a firm favourite.

Body Blitzers

KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub, £22.95 (was £27) | First Aid Beauty
Huile Prodigieuse® Or Roll-On, £26 | Nuxe

It’s inevitable that at some point in the summer, I’ll be faced with flaky bits of skin that no amount of moisturiser will soften or razor bumps from a too-hasty shave. For those occasions First Aid Beauty’s KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub is a hero. Formulated with chemical and physical exfoliators like lactic and glycolic acids and pumice, it tackles everything from rough heels to chicken skin and doesn’t leave any gritty residue behind. Once you’ve solved your scaly skin problem, the next thing that might threaten to derail your summer skin is dullness and dryness. Not on my watch. My solution is to liberally drench myself in Nuxe’s Huile Prodigieuse Or Roll-On. The clever new applicator means the iconic dry touch golden oil is a cinch to apply and can easily travel with you for on-the-go Midas touch touch-ups.

On-The-Go Essentials

You Fleur Eau De Parfum, £32 | Glossier
Rosemary & Thyme Probiotic Oral Breath Drops, £10 | Mahsa
Cicaplast Hands, £9 | La Roche-Posay

To get myself out the house in the mornings, I first have to get three kids out, a fact that means I often find myself forgetting important things. For a beauty editor, that’s fragrance. As such, I keep a small stash of my favourite travel-size fragrances in my bag but the one caveat is that they must be spray bottles. As well as being easy to spritz on skin, it means I can mist my scent onto scarves or collars if I need something to bury my nose in. Glossier does the perfect size and I’m currently hooked on Fleur, a soft, sexy floral that’s the latest in its You franchise. On the subject of stale coffee, it is no match for another handbag stalwart, my Mahsa Rosemary & Thyme Probiotic Oral Breath Drops. Possibly the most bougie looking mouthwash you’ll find, but also very very good. The thyme and rosemary nix bad breath quickly and contain natural antimicrobial compounds which keeps gums healthy too. No on-the-go kit is complete without a good hand cream and La Roche-Posay’s Cicaplast Soothing Hand Cream is brilliant at bringing overworked hands back to life. I also use it as a styling balm for wayward flyaways if I need to. Just rub a small amount between fingers and smooth over hair.
