Kalesma, Mykonos
THE HOTEL
Mykonos often gets a bad rap for its hedonistic nightlife and eye-watering prices, but look beyond the obvious spots and you’ll find a beautiful island with near-guaranteed sunshine well into autumn. The island has no shortage of five-star hotels, but Kalesma stands out for its sense of place. Built on the historic Aleomandra peninsula, the property unfolds like a modern interpretation of a Mykonian village – whitewashed houses, stone pathways and low-slung buildings that blend into the rocky hillside. The design is meticulous without feeling precious: sculptural furniture, natural textures and a palette that mirrors the island’s light.
It is, in one word, chic. Yet for all its polish, the vibe is relaxed. Staff greet you by name, music drifts lightly across the terrace, and the whole place feels like a stylish friend’s summer home – if that friend happened to have impeccable taste and a view of the Aegean from every angle. One of Kalesma’s triumphs is its orientation. It’s one of the few spots on the island where you can watch both sunrise and sunset from the same place – a detail that becomes a daily ritual, whether you’re an early riser or simply lingering over a late dinner.
THE ROOMS
Kalesma’s 25 suites and two villas are designed for indoor–outdoor living. The aesthetic is contemporary and pared back: whitewashed walls, smooth stone, timber accents and soft, earthy textiles. It’s minimalist without feeling cold. Bathrooms are generous, with stone tubs and saltwater showers, some tucked outdoors on private patios. All rooms have sea views, and the terraces are large enough for sunbathing, dining or simply watching the light shift across the bay.
The two most affordable room types have gorgeous sea views or terraces with outdoor hot tubs, while larger suites and villas have private pools. The latter of which is ideal for families, complete with full kitchens and multiple bedrooms for groups wanting privacy with hotel-level service. Practical touches haven’t been overlooked either. All rooms feature sound systems, high-quality linens, strong fans and air con, plus an in-room bar stocked with complimentary water, juices and soft drinks. Our room had a supremely comfortable bed with a mattress soft enough to sink into after a day in the sun.
THE FOOD
Food at Kalesma is generous and rooted in Mediterranean cooking. The restaurant leans into sharing plates and seasonal ingredients, with dishes that feel both comforting and elevated. On our first night, we ordered a spread that set the tone for the stay: tiger prawns with orzo, butter beans with octopus, a silky whipped feta and a round of spicy mezcal margaritas. Flavours are bold and the setting – tables overlooking the bay, candles flickering in the breeze – makes even a simple lunch feel special.
Breakfast is à la carte and leisurely, though guests can also help themselves to a varied buffet station filled with pastries, fresh fruit, charcuterie, cheese and creamy Greek yogurt. Throughout the day, the menu shifts between relaxed poolside dishes and more refined evening plates.
THE SPA & WELLNESS OFFERING
Wellness at Kalesma is shaped by the island’s elements – sun, sea, stone and air. Treatments draw on Greek traditions and natural ingredients, and sessions can take place in the dedicated wellness area or privately on your terrace. There are yoga, meditation and personal training sessions available, plus bespoke programmes for guests wanting something more structured. Sunrise yoga is particularly memorable: the island still quiet and the Aegean stretching out in front of you. For those who prefer movement to meditation, the team can arrange guided hikes across the peninsula or tailor sessions to your fitness goals.
THE EXTRAS
For a boutique property, Kalesma offers a surprising amount of space. The main infinity pool is a showpiece – long and perfectly positioned for sunset. There’s a firepit lounge for evening drinks, a bar that stays lively without ever feeling loud, and plenty of quiet corners for reading or simply escaping the midday heat.
Families are well catered for, even without a formal kids’ club. The villas are ideal for multi-generational stays, and the team can arrange babysitting, child-friendly meals and activities on request. Plus, the concierge team is one of the hotel’s strengths. They know the island intimately and can arrange everything from restaurant bookings and beach-hopping itineraries to private yacht charters and helicopter transfers. Mykonos Town is just a short drive away, and the hotel makes it easy to dip in and out of the island’s livelier side.
THE VERDICT
Kalesma is one of the most impressive boutique hotels on the island. The suites are beautiful, the food is memorable and the views are the kind you think about long after you’ve left. But what sets it apart is the atmosphere: warm, intimate and quietly glamorous. For couples, groups or families wanting a refined base with privacy, design and personality, this hotel is hard to beat. It’s the kind of place you arrive at, exhale and immediately start planning your return.
