Marbella Club

Set on Marbella’s Golden Mile between the old town and Puerto Banús, Marbella Club is one of Spain’s most storied hotels – a beachfront retreat that has drawn Hollywood royalty, aristocrats and the international style set since the 1950s. Today, it remains the beating heart of the area: glamorous yet relaxed, polished yet warm, with subtropical gardens, excellent facilities and a level of service that feels effortless. Whether you’re here for long lunches, wellness, family time or simply the sunshine, this is a resort that really does have it all.

THE HOTEL

A 30-minute drive from Malaga Airport brings you to the legendary Marbella Club, founded in 1954 by Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe as a discreet hideaway for friends. What began as a cluster of whitewashed casitas has grown into a 42,000sq m estate of gardens, restaurants, pools and tucked-away accommodation – but the spirit of the original club remains. The hotel still feels like a private Andalusian residence, with bougainvillea-draped pathways, tiled courtyards and a sense of ease that’s rare for a property of this scale.

The eclectic mix of guests reflects this. You’ll see glamorous women drifting between breakfast and the beach in La DoubleJ kaftans, Marbella’s creative crowd lunching in the Clubhouse  and families who return year after year for the kids’ club and villas. International guests arrive for the sunshine and service; locals come for the restaurants, events and community feel. It’s a hotel that genuinely caters to everyone without losing its identity.

Sustainability is woven into the estate’s operations, from responsible sourcing to biodiversity projects in the gardens. Those gardens – lush, mature and beautifully maintained – are one of the hotel’s greatest assets. Wandering through them feels like stepping into a private botanical world, with palms, citrus trees and flowering plants creating pockets of shade and calm. These are all overlooked by the magnificent Sierra Blanca mountain range that looms in the background.

Then there’s the sheer amount to do. Guests can book everything from tennis and golf to horse riding, wellness retreats, cookery classes, art workshops and guided hikes. You could stay a week and still not touch the sides.

THE ROOMS

Marie-Caroline Willms and her design studio EMCI  are behind the joyful, maximalist interiors throughout the hotel. The property has 115 rooms and suites, plus 17 two- to six-bedroom villas, each individually designed. The aesthetic here is classic Andalusian and more serene than other parts of the colourful communal spaces: think whitewashed walls, terracotta floors, soft textiles and a palette that feels fresh and coastal. Rooms are spacious, bright and designed for long stays, with generous wardrobes, comfortable seating areas and private terraces overlooking the gardens or sea.

Suites offer more space and a residential feel, while the villas – some with private pools – are ideal for families or groups wanting privacy with full hotel access. They’re dotted throughout the estate, giving the impression of staying in your own secluded home.

Thoughtful touches make the stay feel seamless: well-stocked minibars, plush robes, excellent lighting and bathrooms with everything you could possibly need. Housekeeping is discreet and efficient, with a reliable turndown service and plenty of storage so the room always feels calm and ordered.

THE FOOD

With eight restaurants and bars, dining is a major part of the experience. Each space has its own atmosphere, from relaxed beachfront lunches to elegant dinners under the stars. MC Beach is the hotel’s laid-back chiringuito, serving fresh seafood, salads and Andalusian classics right on the sand. The Grill, one of Marbella’s most iconic restaurants, offers refined dishes in a romantic, candlelit setting – think white tablecloths, attentive service and a menu rooted in tradition. Dinner here starts with cocktails at the bar followed by indulgent dishes like seafood bisques, grilled meats and premium cuts of steak.

Then there’s El Patio, the social hub, open from morning coffee to late-night cocktails, with a menu of Mediterranean dishes served in a courtyard shaded by trees. Rudi’s, named after Count Rudi – one of the hotel’s original hosts – is a cosy spot for live music, tapas and a pre-dinner drink.

For something lighter, La Bodega showcases Spanish wines and small plates, while Summer Bar and Beach Club offer poolside drinks and all-day bites. Each venue feels distinct, but the thread of quality and ease runs through them all. Over in the Clubhouse you can settle down in the atmospheric space decorated with plush fabrics layered prints, while enjoying drinks and a game of backgammon. As you’d expect, all food throughout the hotel is seasonal, with much of its produce sourced locally and herbs and vegetable plucked from its abundant gardens.

THE SPA & WELLNESS OFFERING

Wellness is taken seriously. The Thalasso Spa overlooks the Mediterranean and offers seawater therapies, tailored treatments and restorative rituals. The space is serene, with a seawater pool, hammam and relaxation areas designed to encourage slow, mindful time.

Beyond the spa, the hotel’s wellness offering is extensive. There’s a reformer Pilates studio for private sessions, a yoga pavilion for group classes and aerial yoga, plus personal training, nutrition consultations and bespoke programmes. Guests can also enjoy guided hikes, dance classes, and a range of retreats designed to restore and rejuvenate.

THE KIDS’ CLUB

Don’t be surprised if your little ones don’t want to leave the excellent kids’ club on site. Set within a dedicated village-style converted farmhouse, it offers an impressive range of activities for four- to 12-year-olds: cookery, gardening, pottery, surfing, science workshops, sports, music and more. There’s even a seahorse incubator home to freshly hatched seahorses where kids can learn about biodiversity and the importance of marine life. Children can spend hours here, moving between indoor and outdoor spaces, supervised by a team who speak multiple languages. There’s also a nanny service for babies and little ones – perfect for couples or parents wanting spa or beach club time.

THE EXTRAS

Where to begin? Marbella Club excels in the details. The estate has multiple pools dotted between the gardens and beachfront – from quiet, shaded spots ideal for reading to the livelier seawater pool beside the Beach Club. Staff can whisk you between them in golf buggies, so moving from your room to a lounger takes minutes.

Sports lovers will appreciate the hotel’s heritage: Marbella Club is regarded as the birthplace of padel in Europe, with the first European padel court built here in the 1970s. Today, the Príncipe Alfonso court sits among the gardens, and guests can book private lessons or simply hire equipment for an afternoon match.

Activities are endless – think tennis, golf, horse riding, sailing, art workshops and guided hikes. The on-site boutiques offer a curated edit of colourful, joyful fashion and lifestyle pieces, while the hotel’s calendar of events brings guests and locals together throughout the year. We visited during the Harvest Festival in late October – a relaxed afternoon of wine tastings, dining in a sun-dappled courtyard with chefs serving cured meats, paella and more, and even grape-stomping. It’s these moments that show how the hotel is woven into the community.

THE VERDICT

Marbella Club is a well-oiled machine: service is polished, the offering is vast and everything runs with quiet precision. Yet for all its scale and glamour, the hotel still feels intimate and personal – more like a private estate than a resort. It’s rare to find a property that caters so well to couples, families, wellness travellers and long-term guests without compromising on atmosphere. Whether you come for the food, the beach, the gardens or the sense of history, Marbella Club delivers. It’s a place people return to – year-round – for a reason.
