It’s A Shirt
In an ancient city, It’s A Shirt is a thoroughly contemporary proposition. Founder Christina Christodoulou finds high-quality deadstock fabrics and takes them to her dad’s tailoring workshop to turn them into, yup, shirts. The unisex styles tend to run classic, but don’t think they’re just for summer because Greece is a hot country. Christina’s AW pieces have been some of our favourites so far.

The Naxos Apothecary
Brothers Yorgos and Andronis made their money as founders of the Korres beauty line. Now they concentrate on what they love. Inspired by the Greek island they grew up on, they draw on the traditional flora of Naxos to create gentle skincare and evocative fragrances – all presented in an appealingly old-world way at their pristine, white-tiled HQ close to Syntagma Square.

Ancient Greek Sandals
You know the brand from Net-A-Porter. Now’s your chance to get close to source. Ancient Greek Sandals are made in Greece by craftsmen using time-honoured techniques, and the best place to see the fruits of their skilled labour is the flagship store a little north of Syntagma Square.

Mouki Mou
If you like Mouki Mou on Chiltern Street, don’t miss its sister store in Plaka. Taking its lead from the 1970s building it took over, the Athens outpost has chosen a spartan mid-century backdrop for its slightly different edit of high-end clothing, jewellery and objets. It’s probably the only place in town you’re going to find exquisitely au courant designers like Casey Casey or Lemaire.

Hyper Hypo
This art and design bookstore in Monastiraki covers high culture and low in its quest to educate and entertain. You might leave with a mind-expanding new publication, or just a novel gift for someone back home.

Paraphernalia
Only the best concept stores stay relevant for more than a season or two – perhaps because it’s hard to maintain an unerring eye when you’re always moving with the times. Paraphernalia has been ahead of the curve for a decade now. Drop in to discover the latest in Japanese ceramics, Danish figurines, Swedish shelving systems and Belgian lighting.

Number 3
Number 3 could pass for the Athens outpost of Dover Street Market. In under-furnished surrounds, you’ll find niche Comme des Garçons lines starkly presented alongside high fashion pieces from designers with a street edge like Noir Kei Ninomiya.

Modernon
The full name of this store is Modernon: A Retrosexual Movement. Don’t be put off. As far as we can tell, the retrosexual movement is all about elegant mid-century furniture – of which there is lots to drool over at the Modernon showroom

Aphilo Athens
The couple behind Aphilo were inspired by a grandfather’s work as a handkerchief maker. His original embossings and engravings adorn handkerchiefs sold in Aphilo, but they are also now on totes, shirts and blankets. The achingly cool store in edgy Exarcheia also carries clothes, jewellery and candles from other local makers, as well as furniture by the couple themselves.
