The Best Places To Drink In Milan

Milan is the city that defined aperitivo culture. Of course, there are some wonderful spots for a Campari spritz but there's also room for places doing entirely new things with cocktails, as well as some lovely, unpretentious wine bars…

COCKTAILS

Bar Basso

A favourite hangout of the Milan Design Week crowd, Bar Basso is a neighbourhood spot that has transcended that status with long and exemplary service. Bought by a couple of Venetian bartenders in the late 1960s, it’s the place where the negroni sbagliato was invented in 1972 and has hardly changed since. The pink walls, marble floors and brocade seating are all still here, accompanied by a drinks list that exceeds 500 cocktails – all prepared by eye.

Camparino

This aperitivo temple within Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was opened by Davide Campari in 1915. The original art-nouveau interiors – ebony bar, mosaic floors, murals and ironwork – are still here to savour, complemented by a menu of perfectly made Campari-based classics. Find some elbow room at the zinc bar or tarry longer at a table in the space next door.

MAG

The Farmily group runs a few high-quality bars around Milan, including a couple called MAG: the one in Navigli is charmingly cosy and old school; set in an old caffé, MAG La Pusterla is also a nice spot, but there’s another reason to find a seat here. It gives you a chance to ask the bar staff if they can get you into 1930, the invitation-only speakeasy in its brick-vaulted basement. This semi-hidden gem is the place to explore seasonal menus of the highest order and invention.

Moebius

Carico

This relaxed bar near Porta Genova takes cocktails seriously. In contemporary surrounds, owner Dom Carella rotates a signature menu that might include an aromatic Santo Negroni, a fresh Shiso Highball or a reputation-making Capsicum Funky involving tequila, white chocolate, japaleno and citrus. A €30 tasting option allows you to try four smaller ‘piccolo’ versions of the signatures.

Moebius

In a double-height old textile warehouse close to Centrale station, you can now find a Michelin-starred restaurant (Sperimentale), a relaxed bistro and this world-class cocktail bar. Moebius’s drinks menu stands out with bold flavour combinations encapsulated by its Pesto Martini. There’s still space in the building for a vinyl record store and the occasional live band.

Nottingham Forest

Carlo Comini opened this cosy bar in 1970, and his son Dario has taken it to another level. Fine ingredients, molecular techniques and theatrical presentation define its cocktail menu, while the history of the place lives on in its memorabilia-covered walls. There are no reservations, so head over to Porta Venezia early to avoid a peak-time wait.

A long-standing local favourite in Navigli, Rita opened more than 20 years ago just as Milan was learning to embrace aperitivo culture. Quality, fresh ingredients helped it stand out then and now. Owner Edoardo Nono also runs the Caribbean-inspired Tiki Room next door.

Remedy

Remedy

This Porta Venezia wine bar carries 6,000 labels and more than 18,000 bottles. Classical Italian producers share cellar space with a select few international makers. The bar itself has a clubby, almost English feel, though the excellent small plates of cold cuts and cheeses will remind you exactly where you are.
