Simon Cowell: The Next Act, Netflix

Simon Cowell still has an unwavering belief in the power of a perfectly synchronised boyband. But in a world of TikTok careers and overnight fame, does his old-school star-making still work? This new Netflix series follows Cowell as he sets out to build the next great pop group from scratch, with auditions, boot camps and dramatic eliminations unfolding in satisfyingly familiar fashion. There’s an unintentional nostalgia to the format, which feels like a throwback to the golden age of talent TV.

THURSDAY

Man Vs Baby, Netflix

Rowan Atkinson returns to bumbling form as Trevor Bingley – not too dissimilar to Mr Bean – in this slapstick festive comedy that leans heavily into baby-related mayhem. When Trevor’s carefully balanced life begins to unravel (his daughter heads off to university and his job hangs in the balance) he lands what feels like the perfect solution: a well-paid housesitting gig. The only catch? A mysterious baby abandoned on the school’s doorstep becomes his responsibility overnight. What follows is a series of wildly implausible, increasingly ridiculous set-pieces – but Atkinson’s gift for physical comedy remains as sharp as ever.

The Revenge Club, Paramount+

Divorce might be the catalyst, but revenge is the real entertainment in this dark, glossy comedy. Based on JD Pennington’s novel The Othello Club, the series follows six recently divorced strangers who meet through group therapy – and quickly abandon self-growth in favour of more creative forms of retaliation. Their targets? The exes who broke their hearts. From sabotaged dream homes to exquisitely timed public humiliations, their schemes grow increasingly elaborate, and increasingly ridiculous. The series is fronted by a strong British cast including Martin Compston (Line of Duty), Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Peaky Blinders) and Meera Syal (The Kumars at No. 42).
