FRIDAY

Rivals,  Disney+

Jilly Cooper’s bonkbusting Rutshire Chronicles series was a rite of passage for many 80s teenagers, and now it’s coming to the small screen via Disney+’s eagerly awaited, eight-part adaptation. The ensemble cast has plenty of familiar faces, including David Tennant, Alex Hassell, Danny Dyer, Emily Atack, Aidan Turner and Katherine Parkinson. For the uninitiated, the plot revolves around a 1980s franchise-based regional TV network and the intense rivalry between a TV station controller (Tennant) and a rakish Conservative MP (Hassell) who are battling it out to be on top – in more ways than one. Full of backstabbing, sabotage, unabashed nudity, garish clothes and unsexy sex, it also serves up some sharp social commentary on the upper crust.

SATURDAY

Woman Of The Hour, Netflix

Forget everything you know about Anna Kendrick. Landing on Netflix this week is her directorial debut, Woman Of The Hour, which marks a bold departure from her candy-floss roles in Pitch Perfect and Into The Woods. Instead, she dives into the gritty real-life story of 1970s serial killer Rodney Alcala. Kendrick plays Sheryl, who encounters Alcala when he appears as an eligible bachelor on the TV show The Dating Game. The film intricately weaves together the stories of other women who were unlucky enough to cross Alcala’s path, delivering a chilling narrative that exposes the systemic police failures of the era, as well as delving into the mind of a predator.
