Whether you fancy a trip to the cinema or want a series to get stuck into, our pick of the best films and TV will see you through the week.

TUESDAY

Falling, Channel 4

A restrained, emotionally charged new drama from Jack Thorne, Falling explores the collision between devotion and desire within the confines of religious life. Paapa Essiedu stars as David, a Catholic priest whose carefully ordered world is disrupted when he forms an unexpected bond with Anna, a nun played by Keeley Hawes. What begins as a series of confessions and quiet conversations gradually deepens into something neither of them can easily define. As emotional boundaries shift, both are forced to reckon with the limits of faith, identity and personal restraint. Also starring Jason Watkins and Niamh Cusack.

The Boroughs

The Boroughs, Netflix

From the team behind Stranger Things, this eerie new eight-part mystery series is set in what initially looks like a quiet, close-knit community. But in typical Duffer-Brother fashion, strange incidents begin to mount and a group of residents are forced to confront the unsettling possibility that something far more sinister is at play. Led by Geena Davis, Alfred Molina and Bill Pullman, it’s moody, intriguing and firmly in the ‘slow-burn with a pay-off’ category.

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, Apple TV

Apple TV+ leans into darkly comic territory with this glossy new thriller starring Tatiana Maslany. She plays Paula, a recently divorced mum who becomes convinced she’s witnessed something she shouldn’t have – pulling her into a spiral of suspicion, paranoia and suburban chaos. With Jake Johnson also starring, the series blends domestic drama with offbeat mystery, exploring identity, desire and the messiness of starting over in midlife.

Ladies First, Netflix

Netflix flips the script on modern gender dynamics with this high-concept comedy-drama. Sacha Baron Cohen plays a swaggering advertising exec who wakes up in a parallel world where women hold all the power – professionally, socially and politically. Forced to navigate a reality where everything he once took for granted is reversed, he’s pushed to re-evaluate both his career and his relationships. With Rosamund Pike leading the supporting cast, it’s sharp, provocative and designed to spark conversation.

Finding Emily

Could the British rom com finally be making a comeback? Finding Emily certainly looks promising. Directed by Alicia MacDonald (Too Much) and written by Rachel Hirons, the film follows a hopelessly romantic musician who accidentally ropes a psychology student into helping him track down the girl of his dreams after receiving the wrong number. Starring Angourie Rice (Honor Society, The Last Thing He Told Me) Spike Fearn (Ella McCay, Aftersun) and Minnie Driver, expect charm, chaos and plenty of campus chemistry.
