Whether you fancy a trip to the cinema or want a series to get stuck into, SheerLuxe’s pick of the best films and TV will see you through the week.

MONDAY

The Baldwins, Discovery+

In the wake of the fatal shooting on the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria have allowed cameras into their home to film a new reality series. It’s an insight into their domestic life and the raising of their seven children, underpinned by an anxiety-inducing legal process. Aside from that, Boston-born Hilaria’s Spanish accent has sparked much debate online.

TUESDAY

The One That Got Away, BBC

This Welsh twist on the Scandi-noir genre has all the classic hallmarks – a brooding coastal town, a dark undercurrent and a chilling murder. When a nurse is killed, Detective Sergeant Rick Walters is on the case. But with the unexpected return of an old flame and personal demons creeping in, what first seemed like a straightforward investigation soon spirals into something far more complex.

THURSDAY

Running Point, Netflix

Kate Hudson is stepping onto court in Running Point, the latest comedy from Mindy Kaling. Think Ted Lasso but with a basketball twist. The series follows Isla Gordon (Hudson), a slick LA executive who suddenly finds herself running one of the country’s biggest basketball franchises after her older brother spectacularly flames out. Joining her are Scott MacArthur and Drew Tarver as her chaotic brothers, Max Greenfield as her fiancé, and Brenda Song as a high-powered team exec – plus plenty of familiar faces, both on and off the court.

Toxic Town, Netflix

Toxic Town is a gripping new British drama from Jack Thorne. It tackles one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals: the Corby toxic waste case. The four-part miniseries documents the story of a group of mothers who took on a David vs Goliath battle for justice after their children were affected by toxic waste in Northamptonshire. As the truth emerges, their fight becomes a landmark case. Produced by Broke & Bones – the company behind Black Mirror – the series has an all-star cast, including Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Aimee Lou Wood (The White Lotus), Rory Kinnear (Bank of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger), Robert Carlyle (The Hack), Claudia Jessie (Bridgerton), Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones) and Michael Socha (Showtrial).

FRIDAY

The Last Showgirl

Pamela Anderson’s comeback is nothing short of triumphant. Previously overlooked for dramatic roles, her casting as the lead in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl proves she’s having a true star moment. Anderson shines as Shelly, a glamorous Vegas showgirl facing the final curtain on the revue she’s headlined for decades. As she plans her next act, she’s forced to reckon with past choices and mend her fractured relationship with her daughter (Billie Lourd). With a stellar cast – including Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song and Kiernan Shipka – The Last Showgirl is a heartfelt love letter to old-school Vegas and the women behind the curtain.

The Summer With Carmen

Vicious

Helmed by genre veteran Bryan Bertino (The Strangers), Vicious is the latest horror flick to boast big names. Dakota Fanning takes the lead, fresh from 2024’s claustrophobic chiller The Watchers, proving she’s right at home in the genre. Plot details are scarce, but Fanning plays a young woman who receives a cryptic gift from a late-night visitor – only to find herself in a deadly fight for survival as she unravels the sinister mystery within.

The Summer With Carmen

Sun-drenched queer cinema is becoming a genre of its own – think Call Me By Your NameQueer and Moonlight. The latest addition, The Summer with Carmen, premiered to critical acclaim at the 2023 Venice Film Festival and has finally arrived in UK cinemas. This indie Greek-language film unfolds over a single day on a beach, capturing the lives and loves of two gay men. Both raunchy and tender, it’s a sun-soaked ode to desire and connection.
