What To Watch This Week 9.12.24

Whether you fancy a trip to the cinema or want a series to get stuck into, SheerLuxe’s pick of the best films and TV will see you through the week.

WEDNESDAY

One Hundred Years Of Solitude, Netflix

Based on Gabriel García Márquez’s Nobel-winning masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude tells the saga of the Buendía family, cursed by madness, impossible love, war and trapped in solitude for a century in the mythical town of Macondo. Surrounded by mountains, Macondo has seen both disasters and miracles, a reflection of Colombia itself. Its secrets, hidden in a book, can only be uncovered by Aureliano Buendía. Filmed in Spanish, this 16-part series is one of the most ambitious productions to make its way out of Latin America – not only for recreating the magical realism of the book and the century-spanning sweep of the Buendía lineage, but for taking on a much-beloved classic in the first place.

But as Lydia and Paul know all too well, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a nightmare. FRIDAY

Queer

Daniel Craig swaps his usual cool persona for a more insecure, obsessive and at times weepy character in Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S Burroughs’ cult novella Queer. Guadagnino (Call Me By Your NameChallengers) directs Craig as a dissolute expat in 1950s Mexico City, numbing his pain with drink, drugs and casual sex. He becomes obsessed with a younger ex-serviceman, played by breakout star Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), and the two embark on a surreal journey through the rainforest. It premiered at the London Film Festival earlier this year, where Craig’s performance sparked Oscar buzz – which would be his first Academy nomination.

Carry On, Netflix

Taron Egerton steps away from his more flash roles – Eggsy in Kingsman, Elton John in Rocketman and Eddie in Eddie The Eagle – for a tense new thriller. This time, he plays Ethan Kopek, an ordinary TSA agent blackmailed by a shady traveller (Jason Bateman) into letting a dangerous package slip onto a Christmas Eve flight. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra – known for high-stakes, one-location thrillers like Non-Stop, The Shallows and The Commuter – this film promises a sweat-inducing cat-and-mouse chase. Think tense showdowns, explosive action and plenty of running, all set against the mass Christmas exodus at a busy airport.
