Olympics Opening Ceremony
After a year delay and countless setbacks due to the pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics finally kicks off on Friday with the Opening Ceremony. Tune in from 12pm (Tokyo is eight hours ahead of the UK) to watch what’s set to be the largest and most-watched ceremony of the year. On BBC One, coverage will be headed up by Clare Balding and Alex Scott where viewers can expect a series of performances and installations that showcase Japanese culture. The Olympic flame will be lit to mark the start of the Games, followed by the procession of athletes – a great chance to see who’s competing this year, including Team GB who have sent a record number of female athletes to the Games. With new sports added to this year’s roster of events, including skateboarding, sport climbing, karate and softball, it’s not one to be missed.

Decimo at The Standard hotel has just launched a new series of live music brunches where diners can enjoy breakfast dishes while listening to performances from some of London's most exciting, up-and-coming musicians. Headed up by Michelin-starred chef, Peter Sanchez-Iglesias, it’s the first time the restaurant on the 10th floor has served brunch, so we’re expecting big things. VISIT THIS NEW EXHIBITION: Paula Rego At Tate Britain
Tate Britain has just unveiled the UK’s largest and most comprehensive exhibition by Portuguese artist, Paula Rego. Rego, who revolutionised the way in which women are represented in art during the 50s, is famous for her huge body of work, which includes everything from comic strips to history paintings. The exhibition tells the story of her life, highlighting the personal nature of her work and the socio-political context in which it came from. Featuring over 100 works including collage, paintings, large-scale pastels, drawings and etchings, the show spans Rego’s early work from the 1950s to her richly layered, staged scenes from the 2000s. Look out for one of her most famous paintings – The Devil and the Devil’s Wife in Bed. The exhibition will run until Sunday 24th October; tickets cost £18.

RADA Talks: Phoebe Waller-Bridge And Fiona Shaw In Conversation
Killing Eve fans, this one’s for you. On Wednesday 28th July at 8pm, RADA is hosting a virtual evening with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Fiona Shaw as part of their RADA Talks series which feature award-winning actors and directors. The two will discuss their experiences working together on the iconic shows, Fleabag and Killing Eve, and chat about their time studying at RADA and the challenges they face as leading female creatives within the world of film, television and theatre. The talk will be livestreamed and will then be available to watch on demand for 48 hours; tickets cost £8.

Brixton Disco Festival
Brixton Disco Festival has just added another date to this year’s list of events. In addition to an exciting line-up on Saturday 7th October, on Friday 8th October, the festival will take over Electric Brixton, with a pre-party and stage at Brixton Village. Norwegian synth and disco DJ Todd Terje is set to headline, with a series of edits featuring the likes of Stevie Wonder, Chic and Sister Sledge. Legendary DJ Paulette (who has had residencies at Hacienda, Ministry of Sound, and Pikes Ibiza to name a few), will also take to the stage, as well as up-and-coming DJ, Usher Lavelle. This summer, The London EDITION hotel is partnering with Adventures in Apparel for a series of fashion illustration masterclasses to celebrate emerging new talent from the Central Saint Martin’s 2021 Fashion Programme. The Witches of the Orient was released in cinemas last week, just in time for the Olympic Games. The experimental documentary tells the story of the Japanese women’s volleyball team, named so because of their seemingly supernatural powers on the courts. Now in their 70s, the film tells the story of the legendary Olympic squad, who, inspiring legions of fans and a whole cult genre of manga comics and anime shows, have left a unique sporting and cultural legacy. Featuring unseen archive footage and interviews with four of the ‘witches’ it’ll transport you straight to Japan in the 60s.

Popular Notting Hill Mexican restaurant Taqueria has just opened a new outpost in Exmouth Market. After starting life as a small market on Portobello Road back in 2005, the restaurant has since gained a cult following thanks to its tasty quesadillas and spicy margaritas. The menu includes dishes like fried squid with scotch bonnet mayo, shredded chicken tostadas, salmon ceviche quesadillas with mango and coconut puree, deep fried crab tacos with guacamole, and fried plantain with crema. Be sure to add on a watermelon or smoke-infused margarita and finish the meal with churros dipped in caramel sauce. We can’t think of a better menu to start the weekend with.
