After a year delay and countless setbacks due to the pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics finally kicks off on Friday with the Opening Ceremony. Tune in from 12pm (Tokyo is eight hours ahead of the UK) to watch what’s set to be the largest and most-watched ceremony of the year. On BBC One, coverage will be headed up by Clare Balding and Alex Scott where viewers can expect a series of performances and installations that showcase Japanese culture. The Olympic flame will be lit to mark the start of the Games, followed by the procession of athletes – a great chance to see who’s competing this year, including Team GB who have sent a record number of female athletes to the Games. With new sports added to this year’s roster of events, including skateboarding, sport climbing, karate and softball, it’s not one to be missed.

ENJOY A FREE DRINK:

To celebrate the easing of lockdown restrictions, Greenall’s Gin will be serving free G&Ts from a huge ice cube pop-up on the Southbank. The cool cube has mirrored walls to create a mirage-style reflection of the view from the Southbank, where you’ll be served an ice-cold drink by Greenall’s barmen. Available today between 12-4pm, there are 1,000 up for grabs, so don’t delay in heading riverside for a refreshing drink. Look out for the brand’s new Blood Orange & Fig flavour – delicious served with tonic water, orange slices and plenty of ice.

HEAD BACK TO THE CINEMA:
The Witches Of The Orient

The Witches of the Orient was released in cinemas last week, just in time for the Olympic Games. The experimental documentary tells the story of the Japanese women’s volleyball team, named so because of their seemingly supernatural powers on the courts. Now in their 70s, the film tells the story of the legendary Olympic squad, who, inspiring legions of fans and a whole cult genre of manga comics and anime shows, have left a unique sporting and cultural legacy. Featuring unseen archive footage and interviews with four of the ‘witches’ it’ll transport you straight to Japan in the 60s.

TRY NEW FLAVOURS:
Taqueria, Exmouth Market

Popular Notting Hill Mexican restaurant Taqueria has just opened a new outpost in Exmouth Market. After starting life as a small market on Portobello Road back in 2005, the restaurant has since gained a cult following thanks to its tasty quesadillas and spicy margaritas. The menu includes dishes like fried squid with scotch bonnet mayo, shredded chicken tostadas, salmon ceviche quesadillas with mango and coconut puree, deep fried crab tacos with guacamole, and fried plantain with crema. Be sure to add on a watermelon or smoke-infused margarita and finish the meal with churros dipped in caramel sauce. We can’t think of a better menu to start the weekend with.
