A Celebrity Stylist Shares Her Dos & Don'ts

DO invest in quality basics.

They’re an absolute must, especially when it comes to layering – they can be the building block for an entire look. SKIMSWolford and Klayd are all great – the fabrics are really premium. I like to have the same bodysuit or vest in every neutral colour, ready to throw on underneath a pair of jeans and oversized blazer. It’s very much my go-to look if I need to feel instantly put together.

DO think about quality over quantity.

Taking this approach will help you build a timeless, durable and stylish wardrobe. I would much rather save up to spend a little more on pieces I know I'll be able to wear time and again, season after season.

DO spend on your bags.

If you’re going to make one big purchase, make it a bag – the cost per wear will speak for itself. I personally love a big bag that can fit all my daytime work bits and make-up bag but also work as a great weekend bag. Right now, I’m obsessed with my black Bottega Hop bag.

DO ask for style advice.

Especially when you want to step out of your comfort zone. Ask your friends; the group chat never lies. It can feel scary trying something new, but it’s great to think outside of the box and have fun with a bit of trial and error. Most importantly though, it’s about having that inner confidence.

DO lean into your personal style.

For me, tailoring – especially blazers – make up half my wardrobe. I'm always going on about the power of a good blazer. Invest in a good suit and you can wear it together or separately. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with a black blazer – it’s such a versatile piece. My grandad’s vintage blazer is one of my favourite items in my wardrobe. It’s really oversized, and I put shoulder pads in it to create some more shape.

DO mix silver and gold.

Once a style taboo, this is a trend I’m loving right now. I’ve just bought the Jacquemus La Pochette bag that has both silver and gold hardware at either end. It's great because it doesn’t dictate the colour of your jewellery. Recently, I’ve been wearing a lot of jewellery from Swedish brand Edblad as it has great silver and gold pieces that work together. I am also a big fan of Monica Vinader and By Alona

DO try different colour combinations.

I love black and brown together – it's a great pairing for the season ahead seeing as there’s so much ‘mocha mousse’ everywhere.

DO look after your clothes.

It really will mean they last for longer. I either dry clean or steam all my clothes using the Philips handheld steamer. I use it on shoots, but it’s also great for everyday life, plus it’s gentler than ironing.

DO give loafers a go.

They’re having a real moment again and I’m obsessed. From the viral M&S brown suede pair to the Tods-style H&M pair, wear them with a white sock, jeans, shirt and blazer – I love the preppy look.

DON’T follow trends if they don't suit you

Get to know what suits your shape, size and colouring, and then work from there. Yellow could be the colour of the season, but if you have pale skin, that’s not going to work for you. It’s the most common mistake people make with fashion.

@KellyHidge

DON’T over-accessorise.

I like a heavier earring or a single earring and I'm not wild about necklaces – a bare neck looks so much chicer. However, if you do want to wear a necklace, skip the earrings. My formula is earrings, bracelet, rings. But if you’re going to wear lots of rings, I would also recommend skipping a necklace.

DON’T wear more than one big logo at a time.

Feel free to mix and match designers but let just one shine through. Take the Loewe  jeans for example – they should be the focal point of the outfit. They don’t need a logo t-shirt or jacket to go with them.

DON’T dismiss comfort.

While I love wearing my grandad's blazer, a bodysuit and my YSL slingbacks, I equally love a pair of trainers and a great knitted jumper. I’ve bought three lovely cashmere jumpers from COS this season that are so comfortable I can’t stop wearing them. If knitwear is done right, it can appear just as polished as tailoring.

DON’T worry about what other people think.

Remember that you are the only person who needs to like your outfit. If you feel comfortable, you will exude confidence.
