A Cool Brand Owner Shares Her Style Rules

Start with art, not fashion. I was never really a fashion girl. I loved art and journalism and just fell into fashion through an assistant job at Condé Nast. Suddenly, I was unboxing Rodarte and Dior pieces that had been flown in from Paris, and it opened my eyes to the world of craftsmanship.
Your first fashion memory matters. My cousin took me shopping at Harrods when I was 17. She convinced me to buy a pair of silver and white Gucci slides with a metal panel that made my feet bleed – but I wore them to death. Maybe that’s where my obsession with sandals and hardware started.
Style should be meaningful. AMANU launched in 2017 because I wanted to create something that lasted longer than red-carpet looks. I had a sandal made for me in Capri and became obsessed with the handmade process. I wanted to build something that honoured that ritual and made people rethink how they consume.
Every sandal tells a story. From handcrafting sandals in-store to launching a factory in Cape Town and collaborating with artisans in Kibera, AMANU is deeply rooted in the community. Creating something with purpose and bringing jobs home has been the highlight of my career.
Your style should feel like you, so dress for yourself. My advice is to wear what makes you feel confident. If an outfit’s ruining your night, it’s the wrong one. Timeless, comfortable and minimal is how I define my own style. If I can’t move, dance or live in it, I won’t wear it. I’d rather invest in quality and re-home pieces later via platforms like The RealReal. It feels more circular and intentional. If you’re feeling stuck, declutter. My remedy for a style rut is equal parts practical and refreshing – sell ten pieces you never wear and buy two you absolutely love. Fewer clothes means better clarity.
Listen to those closest to you. My mum wasn’t into trends but she had great taste – practical, earthy, artistic. Growing up in Africa really shaped my aesthetic. There’s a quiet beauty and grounded sense of proportion that’s just in you when you grow up there. Great style is about owning what works for you. You shouldn’t need to reinvent the wheel every season. Comfort is key – but that doesn’t have to mean sloppy. Clothes should elevate how you feel, not restrict it.
Take inspiration from the everyday. Nature, Africa, my incredible friends... I also still style myself like I did my clients – I think about the setting and build a persona for the evening. It makes dressing up feel more intentional.
Always dress for the occasion. For dinners, I start with the top half – earrings and neckline first. For parties, I think about the venue vibe. Each look should feel like every piece is going to the same party.
Know your brands. When it comes to summer favourites and wish list brands, I love the ones that marry comfort with elegance – think Chloé, Posse, Alemais, Matteau, Christopher Esber, and of course, AMANU.
Cast the net wide when you’re shopping. Moda Operandi is brilliant for discovering new designers. I love to find and support independent boutiques when I’m travelling – it’s so personal. Printemps in New York is also amazing.
Always keep an eye out for lesser known brands… Temily is great for fun silhouettes, Attersee for refined basics and Anemos for affordable summer pieces.
