How To Dress For A Winter-Sun Holiday

A break in the winter sun is a wonderful escape from wintry reality – but the usual packing rules still apply. From statement co-ords to lightweight layers, every piece must work hard to justify its place in your suitcase. Here’s what makes the cut for Nana…

Poolside Accessories

If there’s ever a time to lean into accessories, it’s on holiday. A woven tote or raffia basket bag is non-negotiable: roomy enough for SPF, a book and oversized sunglasses, yet stylish enough to carry beyond the pool. Sunglasses are where I like to have a bit of fun – oversized frames, vintage-inspired shapes or warm tortoiseshell instantly add polish. A hat is essential too, and I find a wide-brim straw style protects from the sun while completing the look. Jewellery should stay relaxed but considered – chunky gold hoops, layered necklaces or shell-inspired pieces work beautifully against sun-kissed skin. As for shoes, leather sliders are my go-to for flats.

The Printed Co-Ord

A printed co-ord is my ultimate holiday shortcut. It does all the hard work for you, making you feel instantly put-together with minimal effort. I gravitate towards fluid trousers with matching shirts, wrap skirts with breezy blouses, or relaxed short sets in bold, eye-catching prints – florals, abstracts and graphic patterns feel effortlessly sun-ready. The real beauty of a co-ord is its versatility: worn together, it’s an easy daytime outfit; split it up, and you’ve got multiple options. I love throwing the shirt over swimwear as a classic cover-up, or pairing the trousers with a simple vest and leather slides for an easy, polished look.

Evening Dress

Evenings on a winter-sun break call for something a little special. I favour unfussy but impactful silhouettes: slinky slips, elegant halters or softly draped styles that move beautifully in warm air. Lightweight fabrics such as silk, satin or viscose keep things cool while refined. Colour is also key – sunset shades like burnt orange, red and deep pink look incredible against tanned skin. Subtle details such as a low back, twisted neckline or delicate embellishment add interest without ever feeling overdone.

Day Dress

A well-chosen day dress is the backbone of any winter-sun wardrobe. Floaty midis in linen or cotton are simple to throw on in the morning yet polished enough for whatever the day brings. I look for elevated touches – embroidery, subtle cut-outs, tiered hems or statement sleeves – that give a dress longevity. Neutral shades feel timeless, while pastels and sun-washed brights come alive on holiday. Flats, a cross-body bag and sunglasses keep it easy by day; wedges or block heels and gold jewellery take it smoothly into evening.

Swimwear

Swimwear is central to my holiday wardrobe and probably the most fun category to play with. Sleek one-pieces double as bodysuits with linen trousers or a wrap skirt, while well-cut bikinis work just as well under an open shirt or with shorts. Colour and print are where I really lean in: classic black and white will always have a place, but bold hues, stripes and playful patterns bring personality and joy. Fit is everything – supportive, structured pieces that flatter and feel comfortable make me feel confident both in and out of the water.
