SL’s Fashion Contributors Share Their Summer Staples

We all enjoy dipping our toes into trends now and then, but the foundation of any good summer wardrobe is a collection of hard-working staples. Here, some of our regular contributors share the hero pieces they love.

All products on this page have been selected by our editorial team, however we may make commission on some products.

Celine Triomphe Sunglasses

“A great pair of sunglasses is a key summer staple – and these have a timeless shape thanks to the oval black frame which is very flattering. These elevate my simple outfits and I love the signature logo which compliments gold jewellery.”

Chanel Dad Sandals

“I’ve had my Chanel sandals for over two years and although they’re an investment, I have undoubtedly got my cost per wear out of them. They’re so comfortable and look great with everything in my wardrobe from tailoring and denim to midi dresses and maxi skirts.”

Free People Dress

"In the summer season, I gravitate towards a more feminine silhouette. With puff shoulders, a square neckline and pockets, this dress instantly makes me feel a little more pulled together, but in an effortless way. I'm slowly collecting it in every colour – my favourites are the black and sun-bleached green. Following our recent launch at Selfridges – which includes this dress in two colours – I've got my eye on the terracotta next."

Celine Sunnies

“I’ve loved these sunnies for a long time and I’ve finally bought a pair this year – they elevate any outfit and will become a timeless piece in my wardrobe.”

Summer bag

“I completely fell for this knitted JW Anderson tote as soon as I saw it online. It’s a great size for holiday but also looks good in the city with a neutral outfit for a contrast of colour.”

A White Dress

“Summer is all about white dresses. I have a bit of an obsession with them and particularly love this ‘party at the back’ dress from & Other Stories. I wore it to death last year and will wear it again and again this year, too.”

Tan Flat Sandals

"I live in tan sandals during the summer months (both in London and holiday). I bought this Tkees pair (simple and timeless) last summer and literally wore them into the ground, so bought another identical pair this year. They’re the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn."

A Basket Bag

“I’ve been a fan of a basket bag for as long as I can remember, and during summer I’m rarely seen carrying anything else. This year, I’ve got my eye on this one from basket queen, Rae Feather. I love that it’s like a little case – cute but also chic.”

A Pretty White Blouse

“After years of collecting, I’ve got quite a collection of pretty white blouses. I wear them year-round, as they’re so versatile. I tend to wear mine with jeans, khaki trouser or dungarees, with tan flat sandals. I always love the combination of pretty and boyish, so a romantic blouse and pair of slouchy trousers is my everyday go-to in the summer. Isabel always does a gorgeous one every year.”

Cossie + Co Bikini

“This bikini makes me feel fab year after year. The shape is super-flattering and supports you in all the right places. It’s such a fun colour for summer.”

Essen sandals

“These sandals make any outfit look chic. They have a classic shape and I’m yet to find a colour they don’t go with. Plus, they’re extremely comfortable”

WNU shirt

“A fab shirt in the summer is a must for me. Over a bikini, with shirts, tied or tucked in. WNU do the best.”

Striped Swimsuit

“I’m much more of a one-piece girl these days not just because I find them more flattering, but because they make more of a statement. I also treat them like a top or body and wear them with skirts on holiday – a useful addition if you’re packing light.”

Bottega Sunglasses

“It’s always worth investing in a designer pair of sunnies  as they can luxe up the simplest of looks – plus, there’s nothing you’ll wear more. I don’t suit round frames so normally go for cat eye style or something quite graphic and square. These Bottega ones feel appropriately glamorous but are still modern in design.”

Gucci Sandals

“My collection of summer flats and sliders is a bit scary…but I’ve already worn these on two trips and loads in London since I bought them a few months ago. They are unbelievably comfortable and there’s nothing they don’t go with. I’m making the most of these while this style still feels on-point.”

The Row Sandals

“I never expected to like these as much as I do, but they manage to mix comfort with sleekness. I love that you can wear them casually but they also work dressed up a bit for a day at the office.”

Prada Nylon Shorts

“These shorts have been a mainstay in my summer wardrobe for three summers running. I love that I can dress them up with heels, with my Attico mules or with trainers and socks to go to the playground. Another huge benefit is that they’re wipeable, so very practical for mum duties.”

Straw Hat

“To me, an easy way to make an otherwise simple summer outfit a bit more edgy is to dress it up with accessories. My go-to during the summer months is a big hat and I love this one from Lack of Color because it goes with every summer look.”
